Because the doctor prescribed some reeeeally good painkillers? :)

Was the experience of something that would normally be painful? If so, physically? Emotionally? Something frustrating? Something excruciatingly long?

Did you get to skip some usual aspect of an experience? Did you get extra sympathy from someone? Or preferential treatment?

The relevant people with the flu: are they from your workplace? Your friends? Family? Strangers?

Were there less people in a usually crowded place because everyone was sick?

Were some kind of codes or regulations put into effect because a lot of people were sick? That you benefited from?

No.

The relevant people with the flu: are they from your workplace? Your friends? Family? Strangers? All are possible.

Were there less people in a usually crowded place because everyone was sick? No.

Were some kind of codes or regulations put into effect because a lot of people were sick? Not directly, but codes of a related nature did exist. That you benefited from? They probably did improve my chances of benefitting.

The conclusion of this puzzle is just Common Sense!

Now that I got that stupid pun out of the way, were you able to skip the painful experience because of a rule that was aimed at preventing the flu from spreading? because some event had been canceled due to some people having the flu?

Was there a flu outbreak? or flu season? and people were getting sick? and your family was worried they'd get sick too? Yes, this describes the situation well.

Family = husband? father? mother? children? grandfather? grandmother? uncles? siblings? aunts? cousins? nephews? nieces? a mixture of one or all of the above? is it even relevant the specific relation(s)? The people I live with - my girlfriend and her daughter.

I know your vocation is technical support but do you work as a chef on the side? did you use to be a chef?

Was this meal part of a special occasion? a birthday celebration? did all three of you eat the meal? more than you three ate it? nobody ending up eating it?

Leftovers relevant?

Do you like to cook only certain meals? are dietary restrictions or preferences relevant?

Is fruit vs. veggies the difference? hot meal vs. cold? No to both, but OTRT.

Was this a breakfast meal? brunch? lunch? dinner? This.

Was it basically just a regular meal occasion and not a special meal? The painless experience has helped it become regular.

Due to your separate preferences, do you all eat separate meals?

Due to your separate preferences, do you all eat separate meals? I often eat other meals than they do.

Sorry, I mean...did their reaction affect more than just the meal?

Was the meal multi-course? is dessert relevant?

When you ate the meal was it at a table? in a dining room/area? kitchen? were the other two household members physically there in your presence? in the building with you but not in the same room as you?

Your meal = was it a salad? soup? pasta? fruit? a main dish and some sides? did you cook it?

Is what type of building you live in relevant? is it a house? apartment? duplex?

Is there any other relevant specific people involved here other than you and your girlfriend and her daughter?

Other things affected by the fear = where you would go when going out somewhere? sleeping habits? who can visit you? pets? day to day routines? cleaning?

Were your family doing something to try and prevent catching the flu?

Does your meal have to be Kosher?

Are they especially painful to you for some reason other than the general discomfit and burning sensation most people get from eating them? do you find them painful in some other non-eating them way? do they burn your hands? are you allergic to peppers? are you sensitive to spicy/hot foods?

Does your family on the other hand enjoy peppers?

Is the painless experience that because of the hand sanitizer you are able to avoid peppers now?

Do you put sanitizer on your hands before preparing peppers? during? after? This. does this remove/reduce the burning? Yes.

Did you touch eyes? nose? genitals? Any of these works.

SPOILER:
I have acquired a taste for hot peppers, but they're a pain (ha) to prepare because the juice is so difficult to wash away. I needed to either be very careful not to get it on my hands, or use disposable gloves, and I still had problems of inadvertently getting it on my fingers and not noticing, painfully, until hours later.
The substance that causes the hot sensation (capsaicin) is not water soluble, and soap doesn't work well on it either. It can be dissolved using vegetable oil or butter, which can then be washed off using soap, but this is very messy and still doesn't work fully.

Alcoholic hand sanitizer however works perfectly. I use the hand sanitizer to dissolve the capsaicin, then liquid hand soap to absorb the dissolved capsaicin and make it water soluble, and finally water to dissolve the soap and alcohol.
If not for the swine and avian flu scares, nobody would've bought any hand sanitizer.

I could still have used denatured alcohol, but this contains the most bitter substance known to man (denatonium benzoate), which has its own ways of sticking around and causing unpleasantness later.

That was today's chemistry/cooking/life hack lesson. Thanks for playing!
