[WiZ] What the forum needs now is dead men, sweet dead men

Postby WiZ » Tue Nov 01, 2016 9:12 pm

A man is killed on his first day of a new job. He has performed his job well, with due caution and diligence. Shortly afterwards, another man, far away, is killed.

Had the man not done his job at all, they would both still be alive, and both the second man and a third man would have found themselves better off.

The first man is immediately replaced in his role, and his replacement continues to do the same work without incident, despite no procedural or OHS changes being made in his role.

Can you explain the situation?

Is jobman 1 (Joe?) killed by accident? By someone? By his own actions, directly? Vehicles relevant? Other machines?

Did the two men know each other? Do they work together? Did Joe make a mistake?

Did the two men know each other? (assuming you mean the two dead men, no) Do they work together? no Did Joe make a mistake? Arguably yes. To the best of anyone's knowledge at the time, he was doing nothing wrong.

After Joe's death, was a relevant warning/instruction put up for the next worker?

Did the second man who died have a similar job to Joe? Is it relevant what man #2's job is at all? Is he far away, as in across the country? In another country? In the same state/province/region?

Did the second man who died have a similar job to Joe? no Is it relevant what man #2's job is at all? no Is he far away, as in across the country? All are possible; this is perhaps the most likely, so assume this for the purposes of this puzzle In another country? In the same state/province/region?

Second and third man would have been better off if Joe hadn't done his job at all....Better off financially? In physical health/safety? Better off emotionally? Happier? Would the two men have been better off in the same way?

Second and third man would have been better off if Joe hadn't done his job at all....Better off financially? Potentially for the second man, but not the third In physical health/safety? certainly for the second man, but not the third Better off emotionally? yes Happier? yes Would the two men have been better off in the same way? Overall, no (but with some similarities, as illustrated by prior responses)

Did Joe inhale poisonous fumes? Was he in an enclosed space when he died? Is his job scientific in nature? Military? Police? Would an ordinary observer consider it a dangerous job?

"Shortly after" - Time between Joe's death and Man2's death - minutes? hours? days? weeks? months?

Was Man2 murdered? Was his death also an accident? Sickness?

Can we call man 2 Dave?

Was Dave's death vengeance for Joe? Was the intention to hurt him but he died instead? Did Dave somehow cause Joe's death? Is aviation relevant?

Is any other person involved in Joe's death?

So, if that was an excellent question, Dave was indeed executed?

Was Dave charged with murder? With murdering Joe? Time and place relevant?

So, if that was an excellent question, Dave was indeed executed? I was so floored by the acumen of the question, I couldn't bring myself to formulate an answer. Yes, Dave was executed.

Was Dave charged with murder? yope With murdering Joe? no Time and place relevant? yes (in a generic sense)

Did this happen in ancient era? medieval? 15th? 16th? 17th? 18th? all about equally possible 19th? 20th? 21st century? getting exponentially less likely from this point

Did Joe work with food? Was he a cook?
Or how about this: Joe was a taster for the King, and when he died from allergic shock, the guy who had delivered the food was executed for an assassination attempt?

id Joe work with food? Was he a cook?
Or how about this: Joe was a taster for the King, and when he died from allergic shock, the guy who had delivered the food was executed for an assassination attempt? Shazam.

***** SPOILER *****

Joe was a taster for the King. The King was given a gift of tasty non-poisoned food from Dave. Joe ate it and died from an anaphylactic shock, due to a hitherto-unknown allergy. The King was outraged at this perceived assassination attempt, and had Dave executed.

Had the King just eaten Dave's gift, he would be pleased and satiated, and probably have rewarded Dave (at least with good will and favour). Joe, having not eaten something he was mortally allergic to, would also be better off.

As limited advances in medical science had been made at the time, it was not thought that anything other than willful poisoning was at fault, so the taster was merely replaced.

Excellent work, LemonCurry, and thank you everyone else for playing. I do enjoy that this puzzle was solved by a forum member named after food.
