[WiZ] Lies, Damned Lies and Sadistics

Postby WiZ » Tue Nov 01, 2016 10:33 pm

A General Manager, with a reputation of being something of a sadist, assigns a task to a lower manager, even though it was something the GM could easily have done himself. The lower manager carries out the task to the GM's satisfaction. The GM then fires the other manager.

The GM was not acting illegally or in a discriminatory fashion, so why did he choose to do this?

Did the GM want revenge on the other manager? To clarify: are "the lower manager" and "the other manager" the same person? Different people?

Did the GM want revenge on the other manager? There's no relevant personal vendetta

So, did he make the other manager do one last task before firing them? Did he fire them for something else done earlier?
Task: Work-related? Doing something for the GM?

Making them do the task simply because he might as well "put them to use" one last time before firing?
Task: Getting the GM something? Doing part of his work for him?

Task: Getting the GM something? no Doing part of his work for him? yesish (The GM could do this without overstepping the bounds/expectations of his role)

Was he trying to find out whether the lower manager was doing something out of line or against company policy?

Which was the more important goal for the GM - getting out of doing the task himself? or having the lower manager do the task?

Is his sadism directly related to his reason for making the lower manager perform the task? Is it a task that is very difficult for the lower manager to do? Or perhaps the task is a highly desirable one, of great prestige? And by making the lower manager perform this task, he is building up hope in the LM that he might be promoted, or is at least in good books? So that the eventual firing is even more devastating for the LM?

Is his sadism directly related to his reason for making the lower manager perform the task? yes Is it a task that is very difficult for the lower manager to do? yes, under the specific circumstances Or perhaps the task is a highly desirable one, of great prestige? no And by making the lower manager perform this task, he is building up hope in the LM that he might be promoted, or is at least in good books? So that the eventual firing is even more devastating for the LM? No, this is not the scheme

Would the fact that the GM asked the LM to do the task be recorded? Had the LM performed the task poorly or failed to perform it would sacking him have been more problematic for the GM? Does the LM suspect that he is to be fired?

Does the task involve another member of staff? interaction with a customer? The GM's boss or the board?

Is the nature of the business relevant?

Was the LM engaged in an office romance? and the GM found out and thus had grounds to fire both LM and his love interest? but had LM fire the love interest first himself?

Was the LM engaged in an office romance? and the GM found out and thus had grounds to fire both LM and his love interest? but had LM fire the love interest first himself? Spot on.

***** SPOILER *****

The GM had discovered that the LM was engaged in an office... let's call it a romance... with another member of staff. This was contrary to the company policy, and a firable offence. Being a bit of a sadist, he had the LM fire the young lady he was romancing against the photocopier after hours, before firing the LM himself.

Well done, Grip, on the solution, and thank you everyone else for playing.
