[WiZ] 1 object!

Postby WiZ » Tue Nov 01, 2016 11:36 pm

My office contains about a thousand versions of a certain object. Most are designed to be used by a specific person, although a handful are freely available for anyone to use. The ones assigned to individuals see heavy and frequent use, but the ones assigned for anyone are barely used at all, despite prominent placement, easy accessibility, and their presence meeting a genuine and common need.

What is the object, and why is it so neglected?

This puzzle requires no specialist knowledge about offices or the behavioural psychology of public sector employees.

Can a different object be used for the same purpose? Yes, if we're talking about an overarching aim. No, if we're talking about the specific function of the object. The ones for a specific person: Relevant what job/position? No - all employees have access to multiple versions

Would each employee rather use their own than the ones available for everyone? Are the ones available for everyone only for employees or also visitors to the workplace?
Do most people have this object in their own home?

Is a particular number relevant? Yes, this. 7, to save you the question.

We have answered the first question. Now, refer back to the puzzle question and tackle the second.

So the object is the actual, physical key that types out '7'?
Relevant that 7 can sometimes be confused with 1? Relevant that some people like to draw a little horizontal line through their '7's to avoid this confusion?

So there is a supply of extra "7" keys lying around (in case one breaks?)?? Or do you mean that people have their own keypads, and prefer those, but only when they need to type a number that contains the digit 7?

So the object is the actual, physical key that types out '7'? Yes. A 7 key, if you will.
Relevant that 7 can sometimes be confused with 1? no Relevant that some people like to draw a little horizontal line through their '7's to avoid this confusion? no (there is a puzzle in one of Paul's books that hinges on this, though)

Is it the 7 digit? Or the 7 key? The key itself (as opposed to the manifestation of what happens when you press the key)

Are the other places where a "7" would be found for anyone yes: input keypads for door opening? elevator keypads? neither of these, but keep exploring

So there is a supply of extra "7" keys lying around (in case one breaks?)?? no (a most interesting idea) Or do you mean that people have their own keypads, and prefer those, but only when they need to type a number that contains the digit 7? not this either

Is any "7" key relevant? a variety of different 7 keys are involved If not: 7 keys on phones? Numpads? Keyboard top rows? these are all relevant Electronic locks? no Do they keys in question always send signals to an electronic device? yes, for all relevant keys

Thousands gape in awe as a WiZ puzzle lasts 50 posts...

Rcb

Are the publicly accessible devices with keypads printers? Multifunctionals? Fax machines? Phones? none of the above

GalFisk

Is a time typed on the public keypad? yes If so: hours? Minutes? Seconds? these two Is this keypad on a microwave oven? and there we have it.

***** SPOILER *****

A '7' key.

Every staff member has a keyboard and a phone. Due to the randomised nature of phone numbers, dealing numbers, fee charges etc, each key on the keyboard/keypad gets a reasonably equal amount of use.

For the 10 microwave ovens in the communal kitchen/dining areas, all times tend to be rounded for convenience/'close enough' factor etc. The '7' button sees very little use.

Well done, GalFisk, on the solution, and thank you everyone else for playing.
