Is the making of a movie relevant? Not really; only regarding the omission this doesn't have anything to do with the awful Star Trek V: The Final Frontier I hope? Your hopes are granted; that is not the movie.

Thousands = all in the same industry? No

Was this a phone number? Did it spell out a certain word or phrase? Was this part of a viral marketing campaign?
Were the omitted numbers "555"? (If not, how 'bout "666"?)

Did the phone number in the movie actually exist in real life? Yes if so, was it the phone number of a church? Bingo. the Vatican? a private home?

Was the movie a comedy? Yes, but you've got the info now, so here's the

****SPOILER****

In the theatrical release of Bruce Almighty, God's phone number is 776-2323. That number was chosen because it was not in use in Buffalo, New York, where the movie was set. However, since there was no area code, people across the country called the number as a joke using their own area codes, typically asking, "Is God there?" In Sanford, North Carolina, that phone number was in use by a church. (The phone number was changed when the movie was released on DVD.)

Nicely done Grip, LemonCurry, and Westing for the quick solve. New puzzle coming right up.
