Cemetery: literal graveyard? Depiction of a cemetery? Stephen King's Pet Sematary involved?
Is the setting of some work of fiction relevant? Did you see this on a movie or TV screen?

Is it meant to represent an actual graveyard that exists? Is it a part of a larger structure ("model") that represents a lot of other things as well (e.g. a city, other buildings, other areas)?

Is it meant to provide instructions or information for someone? Is it a part of the museum's collection? Is it meant to be seen by visitors to the museum? Is it relevant what kind of museum it is in? An art museum? History? natural history? Other specific subject? Is it a particular museum that exists today?

Was the cemetery hidden from view on camera? Too small to be seen? Did it look like something else? Would anyone expect there to be a cemetery there?

In the museum in real life...was there something from the movie that is now in a museum? A costume? a prop? Part of the scenery? A piece of equipment used to make the movie (e.g. a camera)?

Was the cemetery put there/build on purpose? By accident? As a prank? As a joke? Unknowingly? Was it meant to be something else by those who created it?

So, the model was that of the spaceship in the movie. Was the cemetery a part of this model, somehow? Attached to it? Near it? Painted on it? Constructed of the same materials? Was it ON the ship? Inside it? Was it so small as to be essentially non-visible to the audience of the movie?

Hmm, okay. Did the creators of the spaceship model do it for fun? Was it symbolic of something? no to both, it had a useful purpose but some of the choices they made (such as the graveyard) for doing what they needed to do had some whimsy behind it. The purpose was rather generic.

Did they make the spaceship and needed to add a miniature graveyard to it for some reason? Was it more that they had to put SOMETHING on it and just decided to use a random design, which was a graveyard, because why not/it was interesting?

YES, and that was not the only odd thing they put on there and for the same reason as the graveyard.

Did they add lots of funny little details that were too small for the camera to pick up?

Did they add lots of funny little details that were too small for the camera to pick up? I'd say other than the graveyard, about 5 or 6 things. One of which you *can* see in the film, but unless you knew beforehand what it was you most likely wouldn't have recognized it.

Did they need to add details to the model, so they added several amusing/whimsical details that normally wouldn't be seen as what they were from afar, but would be interpreted as detailed design on the spaceship? Is it relevant what the 5-6 other whimsical details are?

****** SPOILER ******

The Mothership model from Close Encounters of the Third Kind is on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. I was looking at pictures of it on the Web and was surprised to see that several odd details are on the model including a shark, a Volkswagen, R2-D2, and others. The most bizarre to me was a small cemetery. At lot of sites say that all these out of place objects were added solely as an inside joke, but from what I understand from other sources the purpose was as to add detail and texture to the model which would make for a more intricate looking design on screen. Since most of this would not be really visible in the movie, they decided to have a little fun and use a few strange items to help accomplish this task.

Here's a picture of the R2-D2: https://airandspace.si.edu/multimedia-g ... 3-2092hjpg

and here's one of the famous cemetery: https://airandspace.si.edu/webimages/co ... 6000d8.jpg
