[WiZ] A lateral thing happened on the way to work...

Postby WiZ » Sun Nov 06, 2016 8:59 pm

This morning, I was heading to work in the manner to which I am accustomed. At one point, I suddenly stopped and deliberately dropped an expired train pass. Why did I do this?

Were you carrying the pass? had it in a pocket? did it come from your home?

Did you drop the pass in the street? on the sidewalk? in the grass/dirt? in a trash can?

Do you ever use such passes?

Were you carrying the pass? immediately prior to dropping it, yes had it in a pocket? yes, for most of the journey did it come from your home? yes, inasmuch as my coat had been hanging in the wardrobe that morning with the pass sitting in the pocket.

Did you drop the pass in the street? on the sidewalk? in the grass/dirt? in a trash can? no to all

Do you ever use such passes? yes

Do you collect expired train passes?

Were you the one who put the pass in the coat pocket to begin with? was there anything else relevant in the coat pocket(s)? was the pass in the pocket the night preceding? had it been in there for more than a week?

Did you drop the pass on the ground? into someones hand?

Did you intend to take the train sometime that morning?

Do you collect expired train passes? yes, but not intentionally. 'Accumulate', perhaps

Were you the one who put the pass in the coat pocket to begin with? yes was there anything else relevant in the coat pocket(s)? no was the pass in the pocket the night preceding? yes had it been in there for more than a week? probably, but irrelevant

Did you drop the pass on the ground? yes into someones hand? no

Did you intend to take the train sometime that morning? no

Did you want someone to see the expired train pass? Is the fact that it is expired relevant? Did you want someone to see you drop something? Would it still have suited your purposes to drop an old library card, for example? Did you need an excuse to pause in your walking? Was there something interesting going on that you wished to see, so you needed an excuse to loiter?

Did you only have the one pass on your person at the time?
Were you trying to get someone's attention?
Was there any relevant information on the pass? Your name? The date?

Did you want someone to see the expired train pass? no Is the fact that it is expired relevant? no Did you want someone to see you drop something? yes (although this is a small part of a grander scheme) Would it still have suited your purposes to drop an old library card, for example? yes Did you need an excuse to pause in your walking? yes! Was there something interesting going on that you wished to see, so you needed an excuse to loiter? but not this

Balin

Did you only have the one pass on your person at the time? no, I also had a current one (and probably another expired one or two somewhere in the morass).
Were you trying to get someone's attention? this wasn't the point, but if I had not been noticed, the scheme would not have been a success
Was there any relevant information on the pass? Your name? The date? no to all

Did you wish to make friends with this person? Did they seem particularly appealing?
Were you walking on the road? On the street? In a building? In a transport-related station?
Did you wish to get their attention in a professional capacity? Eg. were they working at the time? Did you need something from them?

Did you know this person would be where he/she was?

Did you plan this scheme beforehand, or was it a spur of the moment decision?

Could you have conceivably done something else to get the person's attention? Did you want them to look at the floor? Did you want them to look at something behind you or near you? Something or someone that wasn't you?

Could you have conceivably done something else to get the person's attention? Yes. Remember, the 'getting attention' is only a cog in the great wheel of this scheme Did you want them to look at the floor? I had no vested interest in their looking at the floor Did you want them to look at something behind you or near you? no Something or someone that wasn't you? no

Did you need to direct their attention to anything in particular at all? no (I would have achieved my aim, in the end, without their having noticed what I was doing, but it did help a lot) To make them stop walking? no To make them starting walking? yope

Can we call this person as 'he' to avoid referring to a single person as 'they/their'? Sure, they are now a bloke. Would work equally well with a woman.

Was there anyone else in the elevator? no Had the doors been open for a long time? they could be, potentially Was the man taking a long time in reaching the elevator? this, more or less

***** SPOILER *****

(perhaps one round of questions premature, but eh)

I was getting into a lift to access a more elevated road. I noticed someone in the corridor behind me who was at that vexatious distance which is close enough that not holding the lift open for them (and shaving a good couple of minutes off their journey) would be a bit of a 'screw you', but far enough away that they would have to awkwardly run to get into the lift if they saw me standing there deliberately holding it open.

What to do?

I took a theatrical approach, and, standing in the doorway, accidentally-purposefully dropped an important-looking item from my pocket. Loudly declaring 'Bollocks!' and bending down awkwardly to pick it up and try repeatedly to stuff it back into the coat gave it enough time for this hapless stranger to reach the door at his current pace.

He knew exactly what I was doing and said 'Cheers', so it all ended up as I had hoped.

Well done, Balin, on the solution, and thank you everyone else for playing.

Nice puzzle.

I was thinking there might have been other people in the elevator who were impatient and didn't want you to hold the door. But maybe that comes from being American.

NIce puzzle WiZ. I always struggle with the problem of holding a door open for somebody. What's the requisite distance before it's bad manners to let the door swing closed. I once saw someone holding a door open for someone who was about 100 feet away which I thought was excessive. I'm have a rule of thumb that if they can't reach the door in 5 seconds then you're not required to hold it open but it can be hard to judge.
