He was losing, so he decided to play worse so that he might have a chance to win.

All he's = same person? H? A? M?
Was he playing a game? A sport? A video game? A board game? Was he at a casino? A horse racing track? Is gambling involved?

WAG: is he playing chess, and decides to play unpredictably in order to throw the plans of his opponent into disarray?

Is he a chessboxer? Yes!

WAG: is he playing chess, and decides to play unpredictably in order to throw the plans of his opponent into disarray? Something along these lines.

So, yeah. The biggest part of the puzzle's been solved already. It should be simple to put it all together.

Is he losing at chess? Does he play slowly? Is his only goal to take enough time off the clock that he can get into the boxing ring and win there?

***SPOILER***
Yes, that's pretty much it (though he has to be careful lest the referee decides to disqualify him for it).

Funny, I had just learned about the existence of Chessboxing a week ago from a book I had lying around. Good puz.
