[WiZ] A little silly

Postby WiZ » Thu Nov 10, 2016 11:19 pm

'Yes, I've always been good at keeping my promises', he said, looking down at the piece of paper in front of him. 'I owe that to my father's role in producing this'.

Why should that be so?

Father = his biological Dad? still alive?

Is this taken from a fictional work? It's FMOI, so this is the fictional work. *eerie music plays*

He = HAM? yes is he talking to himself? Yes, or no-one in particular. Or an entirely fluid second party.

Father = his biological Dad? yes still alive? irrelevant

Paper piece = newspaper? notebook? scrap paper? regular ole writing paper? potentially any. Let's go with the writing paper

So, his father had a role in producing the paper itself? Was he a manufacturer? A lumberjack?

"Producing this" = producing the paper? this Something represented by the paper? A general situation? no to these Is "this" bad? good? neutral? this depends strongly on your ideological stance towards paper

Westing1992

So, his father had a role in producing the paper itself? yes Was he a manufacturer? A lumberjack? either of these could work, for the purposes of the puzzle. Assume he was a sawmill worker.

"His promises are worth as much as the paper they're written on" relevant? Oral vs. written promises?
Is there a particular instance where the father kept/didn't keep a promise, related to his job?

Could it work if his father worked at a paper mill? yes Promise-keeping ability of the father relevant? As in, leading by example? No Requirements for the job? no Is an event during the son's childhood relevant? yes

Grip

Was the comment made in fondness? sarcasm? A little of both, actually

Westing

"His promises are worth as much as the paper they're written on" relevant? no Oral vs. written promises? Oral promises are most relevant
Is there a particular instance where the father kept/didn't keep a promise, related to his job? no, but explore this

Peter

Is the man a politician ? Irrelevant, but unlikely, given what we know of his character

Did he/his father say that he lost the finger because he broke the promise? Did he tell the story as a morality lesson? yes on both counts!

***** SPOILER *****

Stu's father, Frank, lost his pinky finger in an accident while working in a sawmill that supplied a paper mill. He told the young Stu that he had lost it due to reneging on a pinky swear. Stu, from that point onwards, cultivated a habit of doing what he promised to do!
