Danegeld: money? A favor? A bribe? A debt? Something paid voluntarily? Is never getting rid of the Dane considered negative? Positive? Mixed? Neither? Never: not for the rest of a life? Not for the rest of civilization? Not for the existence of the universe? "You": H? A? M?

Anything to do with the actual Danegeld of history (i.e. the tax to paid to keep the Vikings from destroying a region)?

Danegeld: money? A favor? A bribe? Thisish. A debt? Something paid voluntarily? Yope - 'voluntary' but under duress. Is never getting rid of the Dane considered negative? Positive? Mixed? Neither? Our hero wanted to 'get rid of the Dane,' so he would regard not doing so as negaative. Never: not for the rest of a life? Not for the rest of civilization? Not for the existence of the universe? An indefinite but much shorter period. "You": H? Yes A? or teenager. M? Most likely, though irr.

Did someone bribe a guard dog with food, and now the dog follows them, begging for more?

Did someone bribe a guard dog with food, and now the dog follows them, begging for more? Noish. The dog is not a guard dog, but food is involved. You might yopishly call it a bribe..

Was the Great Dane being or going to be as destructive as the Vikings of old in some way?

Was food given to the dog? promised to be given to the dog?

Does the GD have an owner? if so, is the owner the one who "pays the Danegeld?"

Was the Great Dane being or going to be as destructive as the Vikings of old in some way? No. However, it may be that our protagonist (shall I call him 'Johnny?') didn't know that.

Was food given to the dog? Yes.promised to be given to the dog? No.

Does the GD have an owner? Yes.if so, is the owner the one who "pays the Danegeld?" If 'paying the Danegeld" = paying a bribe, no.

Was the GD chasing him? No. I think he felt threatened because of the GD's size, not by anything the dog did.

Is Johnny a deliveryman? exterminator? lawn guy? No to all

Consider the title of the puzzle.

*********************SPOILER******************************
As a college student, Johnny had a summer job as a substitute driver for the Good Humour company. As one stop on his route, after he had served the children, he returned to the cab to find a Great Dane in the driver's seat, who could not be moved. Finally he hit on the idea of leading the dog out of the truck by luring him with ice cream. The next day, the same thing happened. Johnny didn't know how long he was going to have to pay protection! On the third day, the father of one of the children came up and explained that the dog would rfrequently get an ice cream cone from the regular driver. The money for it was taped to the dog's collaru. Whhen the dog kept coming back with the original money still in place, he knew there was something strange going on.
