[Balin] (orig. [Redwine]) Sister Susie sitting on a thistle

Postby Balin » Thu Dec 08, 2016 2:47 pm

This is one of Redwine's puzzles from a few years ago that's quickly become one of my favorites.

Roy received a phone call. The caller asked him a totally innocent question. Roy has been expecting this question for some time and was afraid of it. He gave the response that he considered safe. But the next day he knew it was the worst response.

Who called, what was the question and the response?

So Lisa is some sort of reporter? interviewing different notables for a report on what they want for Christmas or the like? relevant where the report is to be featured? in the papers? on TV? mixture?

Did people mock Roy for giving a superficial answer? because he could/should have said he wished all the hungry would be fed instead of asking for food for himself or some such? was Roy just trying to be funny and it backfired?

So Lisa is some sort of reporter? Yes interviewing different notables for a report on what they want for Christmas or the like? Yes relevant where the report is to be featured? in the papers? This, but not really relevant. on TV? mixture?

Did people mock Roy for giving a superficial answer? because he could/should have said he wished all the hungry would be fed instead of asking for food for himself or some such? Exactly. was Roy just trying to be funny and it backfired? No, but you got it.

****SPOILER****

Roy, who is the Ambassador of Z, is particularly afraid of corruption accusations. Before Christmas, a journalist calls him and asks about Roy's Christmas wishes. Roy, regarding this as a corruption attempt, does not want to tell any wish, but journalist insists. Finally Roy says that the basket of fruits would be perfect. He thinks that fruits are innocent enough that nobody would accuse him for corruption. The next day Roy reads the newspaper article, where it's written that Ambassador of X wants peace on Earth, Ambassador of Y wants no more hunger to all people and Ambassador of Z wants the basket of fruits.

Well done Grip on the near-solo solve!
