[Balin] Seventy weeks

Postby Balin » Mon Dec 12, 2016 9:30 pm

For Christmas, Drake was given a large box that contained 12 of them. He was not happy. Then he was given a small box that contained 70 of them. He was very happy.
Why the different feelings, and what are "them"?

Drake = H/A/M

Was Drake not happy with the 12 because he wanted or needed more? was 12 not sufficient for his needs?

Them = edibles? drinkables? tools? pieces of something? lottery cards/tickets? jigsaw puzzle?

Was the large box that contained 12 the package the 12 originally came in? or were they the gift package?

Was the small box that contained the 70 the actual factory package?

Were any of the packages bought at a store? arrived in the mail? bought online?

Them = action figures? toys? BB pellets? bullets? batteries?

Are the 12 larger or smaller than the 70? vice versa?

Was the small box that contained the 70 the actual factory package? Yes

Were any of the packages bought at a store? Yes, both arrived in the mail? bought online?

Them = action figures? toys? This is closest BB pellets? bullets? batteries?

Are the 12 larger or smaller than the 70? vice versa? The 12 are all the same size. Compared to the 12, some of the 70 are larger, some are smaller, and some are the same size.

Was Drake's disappointment due to the actual size of the 12? the fact that they were all the same size? the fact that some weren't bigger ? smaller? than the 70.

Had he received the 70 but not the 12 would he have been content? Or had received both but in the reverse order

Are they actually the same thing? Or are they of two different types of something?
Was there a misunderstanding regarding the gift? Did he ask for something, and the buyer of the 12 think theirs was adequate when Drake actually had something else in mind (closer to the 70)?
Are the two boxes from the same person? Were the 12 meant as a sort of teasing joke?
Bootlegs or knockoffs relevant?

Edit: I just noticed the title. Are calendars at all relevant? Did the one box have a 12-month calendar? Did the other have a planner or journal with 70 weeks/months? 70 pages of something else?

Were the dice needed for playing a paper RPG? Dungeons and Dragons?

Did Drake ask for dice, meaning RPG dice, and this was misinterpreted as regular dice? so he was upset when he got the regular dice so then proper RPG gaming dice (which can be really oddly shaped) were procured?

****SPOILER****

"Them" is "sides of dice."

Drake is a new RPG player who asked for dice for Christmas. One of his relatives thought he meant he wanted a board game and got him that, the large game box including two six-sided dice. This was not what Drake wanted, so he was unhappy. Then he opened a smaller box from another relative, which contained a set of RPG dice, and Drake was happy.

This puzzle isn't based off any one person, but I am part of a D&D group ("Drake" comes from the name of one of the player characters), and our DM got us all a set of dice as an early Christmas present. The set includes a d20 (20-sided die), d12, two d10s, d8, d6, and d4, or 70 sides altogether.

Nicely done everyone, especially Westing and Grip for the final tidbits.
