Did the pencil cause a problem? Was there a problem with the pencil? Was it broken? If so, was the puzzle the solution to that problem?

Was the pencil meant for writing, but it didn't work? Was it for drawing?

Did the pencil cause a problem? Yes. Was there a problem with the pencil? Was it broken? No to both. If so, was the puzzle the solution to that problem? No, but it inspired a solution.

Was the pencil meant for writing, Yes. but it didn't work? It did work. Was it for drawing? No, but the problem would've been the same if it was.

Hope this does not sound rude but above that was actually "Was the PC at the workplace *your* own", not *you* own that I wrote. Probably doesn't change your answer though. ;)

So, there are several PC's at your work that had pencil marks on them? is networking relevant? are any computers assigned to employees as just theirs to use? if so, was it only these that were marked? was the same thing on the screen besides the marks on all the affected PC's?

My bad, I misread. I'm replying on the phone and everything's tiny - which is why I'll have to wait until tomorrow to reply to the detective puzzle as it's too complex for this. My answer remains.

So, there are several PC's at your work that had pencil marks on them? Yes. is networking relevant? They're all networked, but that's unimportant. are any computers assigned to employees as just theirs to use? Yes. if so, was it only these that were marked? No. was the same thing on the screen besides the marks on all the affected PC's? No, there were lots of different things.

Was every computer in your workplace marked? or just on your floor or area? just to clarify, the screen themselves were marked and not say a piece of paper covering them?

Would finding out more about your workplace and how it's set up help?

Were the marks done by more than just one person? were all the different screens that were marked marked by different people or was it that each screen was marked by all the people involved?

Do people use the phone to contact you for tech support? e-mail? mixture of both? relevant?

Are the marks basically just random? no words or numbers or patterns?

Are the marks squiggly or long? or are they like small dots? mixture of these?

Was there a website on any of the monitors? a word processor document? are the computers regular PC's? or are they specifically made for this workspace?

Were the marks made when the building was closed? (Assuming the workplace is in a building.) at night?

Were the doers of the deed trying to fix something? be helpful?

Are custodians relevant?

Do people use the phone to contact you for tech support? e-mail? mixture of both? relevant? Tech support as such is not relevant in this case, though I do that too. Another work task is relevant.

Are the marks basically just random? Yes. no words or numbers or patterns? No.

Are the marks squiggly or long? or are they like small dots? mixture of these? A mixture.

Was there a website on any of the monitors? a word processor document? Probably both. are the computers regular PC's? Yes. or are they specifically made for this workspace? Not relevantly.

Were the marks made when the building was closed? No. (Assuming the workplace is in a building.) at night? No.

Were the doers of the deed trying to fix something? No. be helpful? Yes.

Is any other part of the computers besides the monitors relevant?

When they made the marks, did they think they were not making marks?

When they made the marks, did they think they were not making marks? Probably. At least they didn't expect it until they had already made them.

Just to double check, the marks are from the lead in the pencil, right?

Did they think they were pressing soft enough not to leave marks? (If they were pressing the pencils on the screen.) were they touching the pencils to the screen at all? sideways?

Did they think what was on the various screens was something that was always there as opposed to being changeable depending on how you used the computer?

Did they think they were pressing soft enough not to leave marks? Yes. (If they were pressing the pencils on the screen.) were they touching the pencils to the screen at all? Yes. sideways? Maybe, irr.

Did they think what was on the various screens was something that was always there as opposed to being changeable depending on how you used the computer? No, they were using the computers for everyday computer stuff. Finding out more about them (there areactually two groups) would maybe help.

So let me check:
--There were computers used by students, while teachers are nearby
--The teachers, in the process of showing the students some things on the computer screens, inadvertently marked them with pencils
--The "problem" is that after a while, the screens had pencil marks all over them

Was the "puzzle" figuring out how to remove the pencil marks? how to prevent the marks from getting on them in the first place? trying to figure out how the marks got there (was this not known at first)?

So let me check:
--There were computers used by students, while teachers are nearby Yes.
--The teachers, in the process of showing the students some things on the computer screens, inadvertently marked them with pencils Completely correct. Students also do this while showing things to teachers or other students.
--The "problem" is that after a while, the screens had pencil marks all over them No, but the marks are the cause of a problem.

Was the "puzzle" figuring out how to remove the pencil marks? No, but removing them is very relevant. how to prevent the marks from getting on them in the first place? No. trying to figure out how the marks got there (was this not known at first)? No, it is self-evident.

Would the idea for the puzzle occur if there had been more cloths? Possibly, if keeping them clean was still seen as an issue. Is it relevant how many screens there were? Lots. Would the screens have been cleaned had there been no pencil marks? Probably, as most had fingerprints. Were the pencil marks noticed only during standard maintenance of the screens? Assume yes.

Did the cloth get dirty during the process of cleaning? If yes, did it get relevantly dirty with pencil dust? with something else? Did it become unsuitable for more cleaning? Was it thrown away?

Had there been no pencil marks but only normal dust and fingerprints, would the cloth still be an issue? Were the pencil marks discovered only as a result of wondering why the cloth become so dirty?

So a quick recap mixed with some questions:

You are at a school where teachers and students sometimes show each other things on computer screens by pointing to them with pencils?
And that gets marks on the screen?
Which was your job to get off?
Which you did (at least initially) with a typical LCD screen cleaning cloth?
But this presented a problem in that the cloth would get dirty with the lead?
Which I guess in turn would cause smudges as you would clean additional screens?
And so somewhere in there you got an idea for a lateral thinking puzzle?
And in thinking through that puzzle you came up with a solution to your problem?
Which involved some kind of way to only get a part of the cloth dirty?

Regarding your solution:
Did it involve using specific sides of the cloth? Or corners? Did the solution allow for longer use of a single cloth? Or allow you to use just one cloth indefinitely?

Yes to all.

Did you use one side of the cloth per screen? I used one side on all screens, and there's more.
Or alternate sides for each screen until they became too dirty? No, that's close to what I did before (used a random side).

So if we treat them as two distinct statements, did the first describe an action you took? A general observation? Same Qs for the second. Did you directly mention any of the following: screens, cloth, clean/cleaning, wipe/wiping, school, job, LCD?

Did the mentioning of only one dirty side make you realize that there was another clean side that you could utilize?

Did the mentioning of only one dirty side make you realize that there was another clean side that you could utilize? Pretty much - it made me relize that the next time I got a new cloth, I could see to it that only one side got dirty.

Ok, I'm carving this out a bit at a time here...
Was the second statement a physical action? Or a realization? Or decision? Was it in response to the observation that was made in the first statement?
Was the observation that it was dirty on one side? Was the action turning it over? Getting a new cloth?

Is "dirty" mentioned in first statement? Second?
Is "side" mentioned in first statement? Second?
Was the observation one you had about the cloth? The dirt? The problem of smudging the screens? The effectiveness of your attempt?
Was the physical action directly mentioned? Or more just implied (e.g. "Do something about it" or "Change something")? Was the action something you would do to the cloth? With the cloth? To the screens?
Does the action involve what you did to smudge the screens? Or what you did in reaction to smudging?

Was the first statement something like "It was dirty"? That ws what it referred to, but... Or was there more to it than that? ...being the LTPF, it was intentionally misdirecting. Does that phrase appear anywhere? No. Did "dirty" in the first statement relate to the dirt on the cloth? No. The screens? Yes. Neither? It sounded like something else.

Did "dirty" in the second statement refer to the screens? No. Cloth? Yes. Neither? Is "dirty side" used? Yes, those are the two last words.

Did "dirty" sound like it was being used in a different way? Something other than "has dirt on it"?

Did you refer to the screen(s) as "it" or "they" or another indirect word? Or did you have another way to refer to it/them that was misleading? Was the subject of the first statement an object? Or was it first-person, such as "I saw something dirty"?

In the second statement, do you use the dirty side? Avoid the dirty side? Do something with the dirty side? Get in touch with your dirty side? :P

So, is the second statement in the format, "I *something* *something* the dirty side"?
If so, are the two words:
"went to"?
"came to"?
"stuck with"?
"brought back"?
Any one of those words used?

The first statement:
Something got dirty?

You choose the dirty side?
Take?
Join?
Use?
Touch?
See?
Have?

Is the first statement a complete sentence? Or a phrase?
Is "when" used?

Touch?
See?
Have?

You get the dirty side.

Is the first statement a complete sentence? Or a phrase? This, I think.
Is "when" used? No.

Is the first word an article (A or The)?
Or an adjective?
An adverb?
A verb?
A noun?

Same questions for third word.
Is the third word "thing" or "things"?

Is the first word an article (A or The)? No.
Or an adjective?
An adverb?
A verb? No to all
A noun? No, but...

Same questions for third word. Noun.
Is the third word "thing" or "things"? No, that would not be misleading enough.

Is the puzzle statement an outside reference to something?

Is the first word a pronoun? Their?
A preposition? A conjunction junction?

I'm forgetting: the third word is a reference to the screen, right? Faces, maybe?

If I ask enough un-clever questions, will we get to 200 posts?

Is the puzzle statement an outside reference to something? No.

Is the first word a pronoun? This. Their? But not this. It's "you".
A preposition? A conjunction junction?

I'm forgetting: the third word is a reference to the screen, right? It's a veiled reference to the screen. Faces, maybe? No

If I ask enough un-clever questions, will we get to 200 posts? No, I think this has dragged on long enough.
The puzzle statement, as I pondered it, would've been something like "You dirty person (or maybe "boy", "girl" or "so-and-so"). You get the dirty side."

Whew, that puzzle was tough! Started vague and indirect, had to draw out all the specifics, only to have to turn it back to vague and indirect again. Fun, though, in between the moments when my head was striking the wall.
