[Balin] Who's gonna drive you home?

Postby Balin » Sun Jan 15, 2017 10:22 pm

Albert and Brandon are next-door neighbors who work at the same place. Each of them independently leave for work at the same time in the morning, and each leave work at the same time in the afternoon. However, while both arrive at work simultaneously (or nearly so), Albert arrives home about 15 minutes before Brandon. Why?

A and B =HAMs?

Is anything about their homes relevant? the neighborhood? their families?

Is their professions relevant? where the workplace is at? do they work mainly indoors? outdoors?

Does Brandon go directly home from work? does Albert?

Do they both leave from the same place in the afternoon? Is the nature/location of their work relevant? Does it take them both the same time to leave from work to go home? Do they cover the same distance in the process?

Although they are next-door neighbours, is there any physical or legal obstacle that keeps the houses apart? For the purposes of this puzzle, could the two houses be detached homes on fee simple estates, next to each other on the middle of a flat suburban street in good condition with no barrier between them?

Is their method of travelling home from work relevant?

Is there any relevant physical or mental or psychological/behavioural aspect of the two?

Are one-way streets involved? That's a really good thought, but No.

Do they take the same route to work? From work? Does either of them pass the other?

Is one disabled, or is picking up someone disabled (thus taking longer to get into the vehicle?

Are school zoning laws relevant? do their children go to different schools despite living so near to each other? Yep.

****SPOILER****

Albert and Brandon live in a town separated into two districts, each of which has its own public school. The dividing line is between their houses. Both A&B pick up their child from school after leaving work, but the school where Albert's child goes is very close to the workplace, while Brandon's child's school is across town. This makes Brandon's trip much longer.
