[Doriana] Can you show me the puzzle?

Postby Doriana » Wed Jan 25, 2017 5:10 pm

Today, I didn't follow my co-worker's instructions. Minutes later, she praised me for going the extra mile. How come?

I = Yours truly
my co-worker = H/A/F, feel free to pick a name

RECAP

At work, my co-worker Jackie gave me the task to obtain a speech sample from a person (H/A/F). Because I did not follow Jackie's instructions, I obtained more(ish) data than I was asked to obtain. Jackie then praised me for going the extra mile.

H/A/F stand for Human Adult Female. Welcome, The_Breadman.

Did you record more speech than demanded for the sample? Did you record the sample once? Is it relevant what device you used to record the sample? Did you take other samples as well (like a fingerprint sample)? Did you record the sample in more than one language? Did Suzy know what the sample was for?

Is the recording of the second sample what earned you Jackie's praise? did you feel the first sample was not good enough? were you instructed to get just one sample?

Do you work with voice recognition software? or perhaps some kind of voice-over work?

Did you ask Suzy to say the needed sentence twice and record it on the same device? Or was she saying this only once but you recorded this on two independent devices? Did you change the settings of the recording device between first and second sample? Did you edit the sample before you gave it to your coworker?

Did Jackie think that you played the sample in order to check if it was good? Did Jackie think that you knew that the sample was not good no needing to hear it? Did Jackie liked that you not only did what you were requested, but also make sure that the sample is suitable for the intended use? If you had only the first sample, would it have to be edited to get rid of background noise? Would it be of no use anyway?

Did Jackie think that you heard the noise in the background and decided to record the sentence again? YES

I think we have enough for the

********SPOILER********

I work in language acquisition research. One of our infant studies requires us to record a speech sample of the child's mother that will be played to the child during a later experimental session. My co-worker Jackie asked me to record Suzy while she herself stayed in the adjacent room with Suzy's baby. She instructed me to record a set of six sentences once and a set of five individual words twice, but I misheard her and thought I was supposed to record everything twice, which I did.

When Jackie listened to the recordings later, she noticed that Suzy's baby had been crying in the background during the first sample. She thought I had heard this too and praised me for recording the sample again, when in fact, I hadn't noticed the crying baby at all.

Thanks for playing! Nice work everyone :)
