[Hobbsicle] Nightmare on Oak Street

Postby Hobbsicle » Sat Feb 18, 2017 3:18 am

One night, a woman wakes up to the sound of knocking at her door. She turns on the light, opens her second-story bedroom window, looks down, and sees that it is her grandmother at the door, along with a handful of other people she doesn't know in her yard. Instead of opening the door, she closes the window, turns off all the lights, and sits on her bed, afraid. A while later, she hears knocking again, this time at her bedroom window, and is even more frightened. She climbs up into her attic and waits there in the dark. After some time, she hears shouting, and climbs out the attic window. What is going on?

The woman = H/A/F ? real person or a character? This truly happened?
Was she in real danger?
Was she insane?
The second knocking at her bedroom window was her grandmother?
The crowd were friends of her grandmother? neighbours?
Did she like her grandmother?
The grandmother and the crowd were there to save her from something/someone?

Is her grandmother alive? Is she sure it's actually her grandmother knocking at the door? Is she in danger of: death? Physical injury? Financial loss? Emotional trauma? Is the supernatural relevant? Is a crime relevant? Is it dark outside? Relevant what time it is? Earlier interactions between her and grandma relevant?

Does she live in the neighborhood of a cemetery? When she heard the shouting, was it her grandmother? Was there a word, phrase or name shouted? Was it just a cry?

Is the woman having a nightmare?

Are the dead bodies laying on the ground? or are they upright somehow?

Does she see not the actual bodies of the dead ones, but their tombstones/graves?

Does she see: caskets? Yes! Pictures? Text? No to these
Has she done anything wrong? No
Is a living person knocking at the door? No! Are animals relevant? No
Is there a flood? YES Are caskets floating around knocking agains her house, as she flees the rising water? YES
Are the shouters there to rescue her? YES Hurt her?

There are a couple of details that could be ironed out, but you basically have it, so I'll go ahead to the...

***************SPOILER************************

The woman is caught in her house during a flood in Louisiana. In parts of the state (New Orleans mainly, I believe), the caskets aren't buried six feet under because of a high water table, but are either placed above ground in vaults, or are buried only three-fourths underground, with the lid above ground. Because of this, during a flood, the caskets, which are sealed, can become buoyant and float away. This happened as recently as last summer, where you can see pictures of caskets floating down the street.

In our story, the woman wakes up and hears banging at her door downstairs. She opens the window and looks down to see her yard covered in water, and caskets that have drifted in from the nearby cemetery and collided with her house, including one she recognizes as belonging to her deceased grandmother. So she flips the breaker, cutting off power to the house to avoid risk of electrocution, and stays upstairs to avoid the flood-waters coming into the ground floor. Later, she hears the caskets knocking near her second-story window, which signals to her that the water level has risen significantly, so she climbs to her attic and waits there. Early the next morning, she hears the calls of a rescue team sweeping the area for survivors, so she climbs out the attic window to be rescued.

Thanks to those who participated in this strange puzzle, and congrats to GalFisk for the putting the final pieces in place.
