[Hobbsicle] One Day at the Cafe

Postby Hobbsicle » Thu Mar 02, 2017 4:49 am

I decided to try a new-ish (or maybe not new at all?) puzzle type I dubbed a "tripler". I took all the puzzles that were solved within the month of February, and I randomly chose three (by numbering them and using a random number picker app), excluding some special types like rulebreakers and lateral adventures. The only other stipulations are that it can't be one of my own puzzles, and that each of the three puzzles are by a different author. I then took an element from each of the three puzzles to create a situation for my own new puzzle.

You still solve it the same way as a normal lateral puzzle, but you must also find out the three puzzles that were drawn from. It may be helpful to go back and review solved puzzles. To help there, the earliest puzzle solved in February was "[Galfisk] Detective Lars' First Case". The only questions I will not answer are questions that try to systematically narrow down the puzzles I used. So questions like, "Is one of Balin's puzzles included?" or "Were any of them solved in the first week of February?" will go unanswered. You should discover them in the course of working the puzzle. But you can ask about certain elements from past puzzles, and once you suspect a certain puzzle, you can ask directly about it.

Hope you enjoy. It was a fun challenge to try to weave the elements together with some level of coherence.

Two friends Wendy and Anna were sitting together at a nice outdoor cafe on a sunny day. Anna had just asked Wendy a question, and Wendy was sitting silently, staring into the cup in her hands, formulating a response. She was just about to speak when the two were rudely interrupted by another diner. When the diner left, Wendy picked something up off the ground and said something to Anna that made Anna very worried. After a few minutes, Anna heard a commotion and looked a few tables over to see something that made her feel much more relieved. Why?

RECAP:

There is tea in Wendy's cup, and there is a relevant detail about the tea that needs to be discovered, as well as how that relates to what they are talking about. Before Wendy can speak, a seagull swoops in and interrupts them at their table, trying to steal their food. After the seagull leaves, Wendy picks up something on the ground that she dropped, and says something to Anna as a result of the seagull visit that makes Anna afraid of coming to intentional bodily harm by another person somewhat soon, though that person is not Wendy. Later on, there is a commotion at a nearby table also caused by the seagull, and what Anna sees causes her to be relieved.

Puzzle 1: [RedWine] Old women just cannot handle such a big stuff.

Puzzle 2: [Solong] Voice of the turtle...

Puzzle 3: [Balin] A chilly reception

Wendy = H/A/F?
Anna = H/A/F?
Another diner = H/A/M? H/A/F?
Does Wendy know the other diner? Does Anna?

Is it relevant what Anna had asked Wendy? If so, was the question related to Wendy's health? job? relationship(s)? family? opinion? future plans? past?

Is it relevant what's in the cup in Wendy's hands? If so, is it empty? Does it contain coffee? tea? water? a softdrink? an alcoholic drink? another beverage?

The something that Wendy picked up off the ground - does it belong to Wendy? to Anna? to the diner who interrupted them? to someone else? Had Wendy dropped it? Had Anna? Had the other diner? Had it been lying there before they were interrupted?

Wendy = H/A/F? Yes
Anna = H/A/F? Yes
Another diner = H/A/M? H/A/F? Not human!
Does Wendy know the other diner? Does Anna? No to both

Is it relevant what Anna had asked Wendy? Yes-ish
If so, was the question related to Wendy's health? job? relationship(s)? family? opinion? future plans? past? None of these

Is it relevant what's in the cup in Wendy's hands? Yes If so, is it empty? Does it contain coffee? tea? This water? a softdrink? an alcoholic drink? another beverage?

The something that Wendy picked up off the ground - does it belong to Wendy? to Anna? to the diner who interrupted them? to someone else? This is most accurate
Had Wendy dropped it? Yes Had Anna? Had the other diner? Had it been lying there before they were interrupted?

Any ghosts involved in this?

Was Anna worried that she would come to bodily harm?

Is the tea's temperature relevant? Its colour? Relevant whether it's caffeinated or not? Relevant how strong it was?
Has anything relevantly been added to the tea? If so, milk? sugar? honey? another sweetener? lemon? ice? poison? something that Wendy is allergic to?

Does the superstition involve birds? spilled drinks? broken cups? In the specifics of this puzzle, all three somewhat play in to the superstition, but the superstition itself is more broad and doesn't necessarily relate to any of those

Possible correction: it involves the spilled drink and broken cup more directly than birds or whatever else has been guessed, but it isn't about spilled drinks and broken cups in particular. There. That cleared it all up, I'm sure. ;)

Does this condition involve liquids in general being spilled from cups (as opposed to specifically tea)? No, it involves tea specifically, and there is also an important FA in the question spilling liquids from containers in general? No, and same FA breaking of things in general? No is the material of the cup relevant? No the shape formed by the spilled tea? No, but remove "spilled", and the answer is yes

Ok, so Wendy is reading the leaves in Anna's cup when a seagull comes to their table and causes Wendy to drop the cup? She then picks up the cup and continues reading the leaves? And the shape of the leaves tell her that Anna will come to bodily harm? So Anna is worried about that? And then the seagull causes a commotion at a nearby table... but I'm still unsure why Anna is relieved by seeing this. Does the commotion somehow fulfill the prophecy?

Very close, I would correct you on a couple of minor points and let you guess the last part, but my corrections would make the solution obvious, so I think we're at a good enough place for a...

****************SPOILER********************

Anna is having her future told by Wendy, who is reading tea leaves in her cup. She is looking into the cup, formulating her response when a hungry seagull swoops in to grab a few morsels from their table. In the surprise and confusion, Wendy drops the cup, which breaks and scatters the tea leaves. Wendy picks up the cup and tells Anna that this means there will be a violent death in her future. She is obviously quite concerned about this, but moments later, she hears a commotion at a nearby table, which she discovers is the seagull scavenging at another table. At this point, the chef walks out with a roll of aluminum foil and promptly clobbers the bird with it, killing it. Although Anna is somewhat disturbed by the turn of events, she is also relieved, as she feels that this fulfills the prophecy.

The puzzles used:

Puzzle 1: [RedWine] Old women just cannot handle such a big stuff. (The tea leaves)

Puzzle 2: [Solong] Voice of the turtle.. (The seagull)

Puzzle 3: [Balin] A Chilly Reception (A chef killing with a roll of aluminum foil)

Thanks for trying out this experiment. It was fun to try to combine some puzzles. I think making the players guess which puzzles were pulled from may not work that well, as it requires a bit too much research I imagine, and becomes harder as the month gets further away. I might try something similar either by telling the puzzles ahead of time, or just revealing them on my own as the relevant aspects get discovered.

What do you think about it? Any ideas for improving?

I really like the idea. It's a nice way of honouring other puzzles and puzzlers, and it was fun to not only work out the puzzle solution, but also the three puzzles you took inspiration from :) But you're right, guessing the puzzles becomes harder as time moves on. As for my part, I would definitely enjoy taking part in a March Tripler!

I thought this was a really clever idea, even though I was question-barren throughout. I'd definitely take part in another one!
