[Doriana] Something fishy

Postby Doriana » Wed Mar 08, 2017 1:56 pm

Three and a half years ago, they told us they might change its name. Today, I am glad that they didn't.

EDIT: Updated puzzle statement because we have discovered what "it" is.

Three and a half years ago, they told us they might change the name of the major I graduated with. Today, I am glad that they didn't.

Would changing the name three years ago meant that your degree would have been in the field given by new name? or would it have still shown the old name on the degrees for everyone who started their program when it was under that old name?

Would the new name of the major have sounded more impressive/more attractive to potential employers? less so?

(Given the title) is the major marine biology or something similar?

Did the field that the name change would have put the degree in have a bad turn after the change was proposed? did the field become worthless? harder to make a living in?

Is the degree in biology? engineering? language? the medical field? legal field? vice versa, would the name change have put the degree in any of those fields?

Is the degree in biology? engineering? language? Thisish, but more relevantly, something else the medical field? legal field? vice versa, would the name change have put the degree in any of those fields? Since I don't know what the new name would have been, I'm not sure, but I assume it would have been more in the language field and less in the other relevant field

Happy birthday Doriana! For your present, I went out and got you these questions. Sorry they're late, but international shipping, you know?

So "today" you received or are receiving some kind of positive benefit from having the word "cognition" in your degree?
Is it related to what other people perceive? Is your degree mounted? Is that relevant? Is it more of a personally perceived benefit?

********SPOILER********

During orientation, we were told that they were thinking about renaming our master's degree in order to more accurately reflect the course content. I am glad that they kept its original name, "Linguistics: Cognition & Communication", though, because the "cognition" part (among other things) allowed me to enter a PhD programme at the psychology department.

Thanks for your patience with this one, Hobbsicle.

Because biograd asked: I came up with the title because my M.A. degree is now considered equivalent to an M.Sc. degree in psychology, and MSC happens to be the name of an organization that labels sustainable fisheries.
