[peter365] Filling the Post Post

Postby peter365 » Thu Mar 09, 2017 9:14 am

Hi there puzzle pals. A rare offering from yours truly.

A company fills a vacancy by hiring a new secretary for the specific task of answering mail. She is very inexperienced and knows little of the company and how they operate. Yet from her first day on the job she is empowered to respond to letters without referral to anybody else.

The company is perfectly normal in that they are looking to attract new customers and increase their profits.

Why would they do this?

Relevant why there was a vacancy in the first place? If so, was the old secretary promoted? fired? Did she quit? die?

Relevant what the new secretary did before she was hired by the company? If so, is this her first job? Had she worked as a secretary before? Had she worked in a different job?

Does she respond to letters from actual customers / partners? Or do they give her fake letters to respond to?

Relevant what the company does / sells / produces?

Relevant why there was a vacancy in the first place? Yes If so, was the old secretary promoted? fired? Did she quit? die? No to these, the post was created due to workload

Relevant what the new secretary did before she was hired by the company? No If so, is this her first job? Lets pretend it is but it's not really important Had she worked as a secretary before? Had she worked in a different job? Not really relevant

Does she respond to letters from actual customers / partners? No Or do they give her fake letters to respond to? No

Relevant what the company does / sells / produces? Not really, they're a financial services company .

Does she respond to letters by letter? by e-mail? by telephone?

letter = a written form of communication?

The letters are neither from customers nor from partners nor in-house, right? Are they from potential customers? former customers? other businesses? Are they junkmail?

Relevant why the workload has increased? Did the company relevantly enter a new market? Foreign languages relevant?

Are the letters she gets at all business-related? Personal in nature? Were they written by children? Is she responding as a fictional character?

Do they know she's inexperienced? Did they want to hire someone inexperienced? Does she have any relevant experience? Or skill? Does she answer all mail? A portion of all mail? Specific types of mail? Mail from children?

Do they know she's inexperienced? Let's say they've decided the job doesn't need a lot of experience Did they want to hire someone inexperienced? Wouldn't get too hung up on her levels of experience , suffice to say she was hired to do one job and in truth it wasn't highly skilled Does she have any relevant experience? Or skill? She can type and I'd say that's the basic requirement Does she answer all mail? No A portion of all mail? No Specific types of mail? Yes Mail from children? No

Do they write to a character invented by the company? A character invented by someone else? A character from a fairytale? from folklore?

Is the character human? humanoid? an animal?

Do the people send the letters to the company by accident? Maybe because the company and the fictional character share a name? Or because they share an address?

In truth this is now a bit of a guessing game as Doriana has established why the company receives these letters. For fun can we sort out the facts. I have a private bet with myself what the next guess will be

Does the fictional character live at 221B Baker Street? Indeed he does At 42 Wallaby Way?

*****************SPOILER****************

NIcely done Doriana.

Many years ago when the Abbey National Building Society moved their head office to 219-229 Baker St in London they had to hire a secretary just to answer all of the post they received addressed to Sherlock Holmes. I embellished this slightly by making the secretary young and naive when it came to banking and the like. I'd imagine companies nowadays would ignore post like that.

I lost the private bet with myself, I was sure Privet Drive would be the first guess.

Until next time

As a Potterhead, I should have thought about Privet Drive. But then again, adult Harry doesn't live there, and who wants to send letters to Vernon Dursley anyway? :D Nice one, Peter!
