[WiZ] She could now sing it without infringing copyright

Postby WiZ » Sun Mar 12, 2017 7:40 pm

Early one morning, Jacob is awake in his room, working on an assignment. There is a knock at the door. It is is flatmate, Jess. She has brought him a card, a present, and a cupcake with a candle on it. It is not Jacob's birthday; in fact, it isn't close to Jacob's birthday. He has had no recent triumph or event worth celebrating. But he smiles, as he knows exactly what this is about. What is going on?

I had some more elegant ideas for how to phrase this one, but it would give too much away for you clever-clogs.

Jacob = H/A/M? Jess = H/A/F?

Relevant what kind of assignment Jacob is working on? Is it an assignment for school? If so, high school? college? An an assignment for work? Is it a written assignment?

Are Jacob and Jess just flatmates? Or are they also friends? fellow students? co-workers? related?

Did Jess do what she did in order to cheer Jacob up? to make him laugh? to thank him for something?

Is Jess playing some sort of prank?

Did Jess give him the items to help him?
Anything written on the card? Relevant?
Relevant what was in the present?

Did these items have some kind of significance for them? They had a general significance; there is no relevant especial significance to any particular person
Did Jess give him the items to help him? Hard to answer. Her intentions were benign; although this action does not grant him any sort of assistance
Anything written on the card? yes Relevant? yes, in a general sense
Relevant what was in the present? no

Is the particular day of any significance? If she had given it to him a week from now, would it have the same effect? A week earlier?

Card: Is it a kind of card that you can buy at a drugstore or something, like Hallmark would make? If so, is it a birthday card? Thank you card? Get well? Congratulatory? Condolence? Holiday?

If not, is it a handmade card? A business card? A credit card? A playing card? Did she write something on it?

Present: is it a wrapped box or bag or something similar? Is what is inside of significance? Would he already know what it is?

Cupcake: typical, edible cupcake? With birthday candle? Is the candle lit?

Is someone else's birthday relevant? Relevant what happened on Jacob's actual birthday? Did he cancel celebrations? Did he work for college? Did he intend to work on the assignment in question, but postponed it until now?

Did something relevant take place in Jacob's life one year before? Was he metaphorically reborn? Has he reached a milestone?

Is there anything out of the ordinary physically or mentally about Jacob or Jess?

Does Jess celebrate the "birthday" of the assignment? because Jacob has been working on it for so long already?

Is this actually in celebration of his birthday?
Are half birthdays relevant?
Does his birthday fall on a holiday?
Might she give him a present on his actual birthday as well?

Are half birthdays relevant? not per se
Does his birthday fall on a holiday? no
Might she give him a present on his actual birthday as well? There's no reason (apart from economics) that she couldn't, although forswearing this as part of her schema makes sense.

Has he previously complained about the date of his birthday?
Does his birthday coincide with a holiday?
Is Present Day exactly half a year after his actual birthday? Is Present Day on his "reverse birthday" (i.e. October 6 instead of June 10?)
Numeral systems relevant? (Thinking about the Halloween/Christmas joke)

I once had an American friend tell me on July 5 that his birthday was May 7. I looked at my calendar, saw '05/07', thought 'Ah, that's American for May 7', and wished him a happy birthday

Does his birthday coincide with a societally negative event (i.e., it's very much associated with a famous negative event)? such as September 11? Or are his complaints about the date of a more personal nature?

Does he object to the specific numbers/numerals in his birthdate? For example, several Asian cultures have negative superstitions surrounding the number four, and English speakers tend to have a thing against the number 13 -- is this sort of thing relevant?

Does his birthday coincide with a societally negative event (i.e., it's very much associated with a famous negative event)? such as September 11? yes, although not remotely as calamitous - and opinion is divided as to how negative the event is Or are his complaints about the date of a more personal nature? Yes, there is a relevant personal aspect to his complaints

Does the 'event' happen every year but it doesn't always impact Jacob negatively? Would this be an issue If Jacob wasn't a student? If his name wasn't Jacob? Would celebrating his birthday on the correct date cause offence? Would his family members also not give Jacob gifts or cards on his actual birthday?
