[WiZ] Schizophonic

Postby WiZ » Tue Mar 21, 2017 11:21 pm

Today, I was introduced to two new staff members at work. I spoke to the first about how infuriating my student loan was. I talked to the second about the heatwave I experienced in Southern France.

I don't normally talk about either of these subjects, and nothing suggested to me that they would find these topics especially interesting. Why did I bring these issues up?

Do you and the new staff members have the same job? Is your job relevant?
Relevant whether new workers are male or female? Age relevant?
Do both new workers speak English?

Both male? Both female? One of each?
Did the workers end up finding these topics interesting? Relevant?
Could you have switched the topics? As in talk to co-worker 1 about the heat wave instead and vice versa? Or did you pick each topic specifically for that person?

Did you talk about those things based on something they said? Or questions they asked you? Is there something external that prompts you to choose those topics? Like an icebreaker question or something? ("Tell the group what you think about Southern France." or "What infuriates you most about college?") ;)

Does coworker A share her name with your university? With your student loan company? Is it Sallie? Mae? Both?

Does coworker B share her name with the name of the heat wave?

Is their appearance or yours relevant? Their ages or yours? Is the weather that day important? Did the conversation about the heatwave arise because it was very warm that day?

Did either new colleague say something that was inappropriate or unusual to someone you've just met? Did they reference your age? your fair skin? the fact that you're a redhead (i think)? Even if they didn't mention them are any of these things relevant?

Do we need to establish why your student loan was infuriating? How long it took to pay it off? Difficulties in getting approval? Interest rate that you were charged?

Doriana

Does coworker A share her name with your university? No, she wasn't Victoria :) With your student loan company? No, she wasn't Studylink :P Is it Sallie? Mae? Both? no to these

Does coworker B share her name with the name of the heat wave? no (I didn't even realise heat waves had names)

Peter

Is their appearance or yours relevant? no Their ages or yours? no Is the weather that day important? no (It's Wellington; assume 'shite') Did the conversation about the heatwave arise because it was very warm that day? no - if it were 25 degrees, we would talk about the heatwave in Wellington

Did either new colleague say something that was inappropriate or unusual to someone you've just met? no Did they reference your age? no your fair skin? no the fact that you're a redhead (i think)? Harry's colour, William's quantity Even if they didn't mention them are any of these things relevant? no

Do we need to establish why your student loan was infuriating? no How long it took to pay it off? no; although their enduring nature is a little relevant Difficulties in getting approval? no Interest rate that you were charged? no

A lot of red there, but perfectly reasonable questions

Westing

Were these coworkers from France? Of French descent? irrel to both Have French names? They had names that exist more or less equivalently in both French and English
Did you study a foreign language in college? yes, but irrelevant

I assumed that if hurricanes and other storms had names, maybe heat waves did too. No idea though.

Are their first names relevant? last names? full names?
Are their names the only relevant thing about them?

Are you trying to remember their names? Are you using some kind of mnemonic device? Are you relating their names with names or words in your conversation (e.g. one of their first names is a town in southern France)? Are you using anagrams?

The lateral logic has been established - I don't think we'd enjoy stretching this out for 50 posts while we guess at the specific names.

***** SPOILER *****

Their names were Bernadette and Bernice. Knowing that I would be liable to mix them up for eternity, I devised a mnemonic. I talked to Bernadette about how much I wanted to set fire to my student loan (Burn-a-debt) and Bernice about how much I got sunburned on the Riviera (Burn-Nice).

Well done, GalFisk, on the solution, Hobbsicle for some excellent questions, and everyone else for playing!

I've heard the "bun-a-debt" play on words before, but never burn-Nice. Very Nice!
