[Doriana] Chris keeps quiet

Postby Doriana » Sat Mar 25, 2017 2:33 pm

Chris (H/A/M) is a researcher and a proponent of open science, i.e. making your data, code, manuscripts etc. open to the public. However, Chris has some data that he'll never make publicly accessible. What are they and how come?

Is this data part of his research? Does he hope someone ELSE will make it publicly accessible? Is it part of a long-term study that won't be completed until after he's dead?
His field relevant/helpful?

Would publishing the data be impossible? Cause lots of effort? Get Chris in some sort of trouble? Damage his reputation?

Relevant how he got the data? Somewhat, see next answer Has he bought them? Collected them? Produced them as part of his research? None of these. The data had been collected by someone else and was given to Chris so that he could edit and analyze it.
Data mining relevant? No

Is the data regarding people? Is it sociological in nature? Psychological? Uh...linguistical? Financial? Political?

If it's related to people, is it relevant who the data was acquired from? Would it be relevant that the people from whom the data was acquired would see the data?

They are fake people/results? No They are dead? Yes (There's a slight chance some of them might still be alive, but they'd be well into their nineties now. For the sake of the puzzle, you can assume they are all dead.)

Are the contents of the speeches offensive? Nazis involved (given the supposed age of the speakers)?
Another dictatorship?

So, Chris has acquired a collection of Nazi speeches, to research on the linguistic features of hate speech or propaganda or the like? And he does not make it publicly accessible, just because there are plenty of reasons not to make a collection of Nazi speeches publicly accessible?

So, Chris has acquired a collection of Nazi speeches Yes, to research on the linguistic features of hate speech or propaganda or the like? No, but irrel And he does not make it publicly accessible, just because there are plenty of reasons not to make a collection of Nazi speeches publicly accessible? Yes, although he usually only mentions one main reason

********SPOILER********

Chris is the editor of the Lautdenkmal reichsdeutscher Mundarten, the first high-quality recording of German dialects, recorded in 1937. The Lautdenkmal was given to Hitler as a birthday present by the German Civil Servants Union, so most speeches contain a lot of praise for Hitler and the Nazi regime. Although the recordings are of high scientific value - not only for dialectologists, but also for historians, sociologists and the like -, Chris will not make them openly accessible because they might get into the wrong hands really fast.
