[JenBurdoo] Folksong Puzzle 6: Shenanigans

Postby JenBurdoo » Mon Mar 27, 2017 11:20 pm

Armed men break down the door of a crowded suburban home, and attack a man standing in the corner. They jump on his back and beat him about the head. By the time they're done, he's dead. They are not arrested, but the other people in the house are. Explain.

AFAIK, I don't know this one, which means I can ask questions! Yay!

Is the man dead because of the blows to the head? Was he dead before the beating?
Is the man standing in the corner a real human adult male? Is he a statue?
Other people in the house: H/A/M?

Did the armed men attempt to harm anyone else in the house? Did the armed men elegantly interact with anyone else in the house? If so, before, during, or after this incident?
Did anyone in the house attempt to stop the beating?

Was the man on fire? Or did he have insects all over him?

Is the man dead because of the blows to the head? No. Was he dead before the beating? Yes.
Is the man standing in the corner a real human adult male? Yes. Is he a statue? No.
Other people in the house: H Yes. /A Yes. /M Both, but the implication is that almost all were male. ?

Did the armed men attempt to harm anyone else in the house? Assume yes. Did the armed men elegantly interact with anyone else in the house? If you mean "relevantly," yes. If so, before, during, or after this incident? During and after.
Did anyone in the house attempt to stop the beating? Maybe, maybe not. Irrelevant.

Was the man on fire? Or did he have insects all over him? No to both.

Were the armed men committing a crime? Were those in the house? Had either of those groups committed a crime?

Had the people in the house killed the man? Was an attempt made to frame the armed men as killers of this man? Are the armed men a mob? Police? Military?

Were the armed men committing a crime? No. Were those in the house? YMMV; a misdemeanor at best. Had either of those groups committed a crime? No.

Dead guy + lots of people in the house + Irish folk = probably a wake. Doesn't mean I have a clue about the rest of the puzzle...

Was the arrest directly related to the wake? Were the arrested people all charged with the same crime? If so, a felony? Misdemeanor? Had they committed the crime with which they were charged?
Did the police beat up the dead man knowing he was dead?

Spoiler:

This is from the Newfoundland song The Night Pat Murphy Died. The relevant verses:

Then the fight got fierce and strong and everyone joined in,
And someone knocked the whiskers off of poor old Darby Flynn
And dirty Andy Burke was there, what do you think he done?
He turned the corpse right on its head in the corner just for fun

Chorus:

That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy,
That's how they showed their honor and their pride
They said it was a sin and a shame and they winked at one another
And every drink in the house was full the night Pat Murphy died

Someone hollered for the cops, they busted down the door,
They hopped right on old Paddy's back, and they knocked him to the floor
They rapped him twice behind the ears, and once upon the head
And when they got up off his back they found out he was dead.

Well, Mrs. Murphy started in to battlin' with the cops
She licked every one of them, chased them several blocks
A lovely time was had by all, eighteen in court were tried
For breaking out in riot on the night Pat Murphy died.

Okay, so the first song that popped into my head revolving around a wake was "The Night Pat Murphy Died," but I didn't think it fit the puzzle statement. So, as it turns out, Great Big Sea (a Newfoundland band) didn't include any of the verses from this puzzle in their version (the only version I'd heard before today), lol.

Not surprised; there's a number of versions, but I learned it from the Rambling Sailors.
