Does he work for the supermarket?
Is he looking to buy something else? And is using the item as an aid in asking for what he needs?
Is he trying to rob the place? And is using the item to threaten the cashier?

Is what he is looking to buy embarrassing to him?

Is there some kind of relevant language barrier?

EDIT: If so, is he using any words at all? Does he e.g. want to buy chicken, hold up an egg and say "Mother"?

Is the brand name of the item he's holding relevant? Of the item he wants to buy?

Is he asking the price? Or anything else about the properties of the item?

Is the item food? Relevant exactly what it is? Is it an item for sale? Is it similar or related in some way to what he actually wants to buy?

***** SPOILER *****

The man is a recent migrant with a limited command of the local language. He cannot find the word for 'chicken', so he approaches the nearest staff member with an egg and says 'Mother'.

Right. Well done, Doriana. That was embarrassing. Talk amongst yourselves.

There's a scene just like that in a German movie, but I didn't think that'd actually be it. Sorry for killing this off so fast... Nice one nevertheless :)

Unless that film happened to be Run Lola Run, I haven't seen it :)

A friend I was staying with in Munich gently reprimanded me on how far behind I had fallen with my knowledge of German cinema.
