[Hobbsicle] Catch-21

Postby Hobbsicle » Wed Apr 05, 2017 2:56 am

A man is taking an important test. He is asked a simple question, and gives an answer that is both true and is what the test-givers were looking for, but nonetheless, they fail him as a result. They did not want to fail him, and he did not receive outside help in answering, so why did they choose to fail him?

Did they fail him because he cheated? Because he proved he didn't have the understanding the test was testing for? Did he memorize an answer rather than understand how to derive it?

Did they want him to not know the answer? Were they looking for someone ignorant in a certain area, and he was overqualified? Did he take too long to answer? Do something like count on his fingers?
Are they conducting a survey? A study?
Is a physical impairment relevant? Vision? Hearing?

Is the lie detector bigger than a breadbox?

Does it indicate that he's lying? Telling the truth? Does his answer indicate that the lie detector is malfunctioning? Or unreliable? Is he being lie-detected in connection with a crime? A security issue? Is he relevantly guilty of something? Or innocent of something?

Is the lie detector bigger than a breadbox? I don't know, maybe? Doriana saved me from having to Google two things: "How big is a lie detector?" and "How big is a breadbox?" So the mystery continues.

Does it indicate that he's lying? Yes! Telling the truth? No Does his answer indicate that the lie detector is malfunctioning? No Or unreliable? No Is he being lie-detected in connection with a crime? No A security issue? No Is he relevantly guilty of something? Or innocent of something? No to both

Does the man have schizophrenia? YES multiple personalities? I don't know about "multiple", but that's close enough.

********************SPOILER*************************

Some doctors in a mental institution are thinking of releasing a schizophrenic patient, and decide to give him a lie-detector test. One of the questions asked was, "Are you Napoleon?" He replied "no", which was both obviously true and what the doctors were hoping to hear, but the lie-detector showed that he was lying, so they couldn't release him.

Thanks for playing everyone, and good job to Grip, GalFisk, and Doriana for identifying some key pieces. And the title refers to a Catch 22, and also the fact that Napoleon died in 1821.
