[Westing1992] Checkmarks

Postby Westing1992 » Wed Apr 05, 2017 7:05 pm

Every year I write a list. Most of the items stay the same; others are replaced, some by necessity, some by whim.
I give this list to someone I've never met, and I don't know to what extent they'll use it until almost a year later.
What is this list?

Shouldn't it be "stay the same"?

Do you always give this list to the same person? Or a different person every year? Do you give it to them in person? send it by mail? by email? submit it online?

Are the things on the list tangible objects? ideas? wishes? names? addresses? to-do items?

Shouldn't it be "stay the same"? Oops, corrected!

Do you always give this list to the same person? Not necessarily. Or a different person every year? No. Do you give it to them in person? send it by mail? by email? submit it online? These last two.

Are the things on the list tangible objects? They're these, in the end. ideas? wishes? names? addresses? to-do items?

Is it a list of rankings? a Top 10 or Top 100 type of list? No, but OTRT.

Is it a list of ideas? Names for things? Things for a certain purpose? Sort of... (Try not to get too hung up on the tangible object descriptor; it might be misleading.) Does the list contain the same number of things every year? Yes. Or roughly the same numer (say, within 15%)?

Is the list submitted in connection with your job? A hobby? A holiday? An event? A game?

Will the person you submit to perform a service for you? Do they make the things on your list into tangible objects?

Could the things on your list be characterized as suggestions? Might the person use some things from your list, and some from other peoples'? Are they organizing something for a group?

Is the list submitted in connection with your job? A hobby? A holiday? An event? This is closest, but it probably wouldn't be considered an 'event'. A game?

Will the person you submit to perform a service for you? No. Do they make the things on your list into tangible objects? Not really.

Could the things on your list be characterized as suggestions? YES. Might the person use some things from your list, and some from other peoples'? Yes. Are they organizing something for a group? Yes.

Hm...is it a list of suggestions for a book club? Or a similar group that does a different ___________ each month?
Are the suggestions you have to change ones that have been done? While the ones changed on a whim are just because you prefer a different ______ now?

Is school relevant? Religious organization? Political organization?

Would knowing the number of items on the list help? If so, 7? 12? 40? 52? 100? 365? Somewhere between those?

Is school relevant? No. Religious organization? No. Political organization? Yes, but it's not the type one usually thinks of.

Would knowing the number of items on the list help? If so, 7? 12? 40? 52? 100? 365? Somewhere between those? It's fifty, though other people might suggest fewer.

Is it a list of activities? Ideas? Groups? Ideas is closest--suggestions is better. Is culture relevant? Yes! (But think broadly.) Events? As I've answered before, it wouldn't be considered an event as such; it's just the creation of something from suggestions.

***SPOILER***

Every year, the US Librarian of Congress selects 25 "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" films to be preserved in the National Film Registry. Members of the public are allowed to nominate up to 50 films each year for consideration. Requirements are that all films must be at least ten years old and have a surviving copy; though TV programs and foreign productions are not technically prohibited, the registry typically only includes theatrically-released American productions or co-productions (and oddities like test footage, home movies, and others.)

For the past few years, I have submitted a list of 50 films for consideration to the Librarian, whom I've never met. I, of course, need to replace any films that got in; I also sometimes switch out nominees for ones I feel are more worthy of inclusion. I usually submit my list early, in January; I don't know which of my nominations are added until the announcement is made in December.
