Lose face in the Japanese honor/shame sense? A more literal sense?
"We"= you and another person? "less different" from each other?
Different... in appearance? Personality? Name? Occupation? Hobby/knowledge?
A misunderstanding relevant?

Is the face a part of the human body, the front of the head? or is it the face of an object, like a clock, or a rock? or the math definition, like the face of a polyhedron?
is "face" the name of something?

Relevant part of the face: nose, mouth, lips, eyes, ears, cheeks, forehead, temples, eyebrows, eyelids, eyelashes, chin?

Is this relevant part what is different between the two? If not, is the difference in physical aspect? or in hair? clothes?

Relevant the height at which the mirror is fixed to the wall? Is it at a height so that it is centered on your girlfriend head? and when you use it your forehead is not reflected?

SPOILER:
I built a lighted frame for a pair of mirrors, so she could use it when getting ready in the morning. Naturally, I asked her to decide the perfect height of the mirror, which just happens to cut off my face at eyebrow height. If she was taller or I was shorter, I wouldn't lose (part of my) face.
Thanks for puzzling!
