[Balin] Bug in a jar

Postby Balin » Wed Jun 14, 2017 1:54 am

A woman purchases an item and keeps it in the same, easily accessible place at all times, with no intent of using it. What is it, and why?

Does she keep it in her home? Is it somewhere visible? Is it at all aesthetic? Does she intend someone else to use it? Does it eventually get used by anyone? Does she buy it for herself? Is it a physical, tangible thing?

Do many people purchase this item? Do they buy it with the intent of using it? Is it something that would be used in extreme or unusual circumstances? Is it a coffin?

In doing this, does the woman increase her safety or security? Status? Quality of life? Does she do this to the detriment of someone else? Would there be negative consequences for the woman or someone else if it were used?

would she use the item just in case of necessity? did she feel more safe having the item with her?
Is it a sort of weapon?Self-defence relevant? Is it bigger than a football ball?Than a golf ball?

Is that a sort of provision?Spare?Stock? Was she doing a journey?A trip? Is her home easily accessible from where she found herself at the time of the purchasing? Was she alone? Did she suffer from allergies?Diseases? Is the item a medicine? Were the item be placed in a non accessible place, would it still be useful? Would she feel relaxed?

Accessible place: in a bag?in the pocket?
Is the item usually meant to be put in a specific place? A car? A specific room of an house? In a bag? In a public place? Is it part of her clothing?clothing in general?

If the item were used does it need to be opened? activated?a button should be pressed?
Is the item usually used in the proper sense of the term? I mean...is it a sort of magic tree(don't know the precise english translation... it is called arbor magic and it is usually put in cars) that is always "used" until its perfume stop working?

When you say "use", do you just mean "stick the bumper sticker on the car" as bumper stickers are usually used? Does the woman gain some sort of utility from having the bumper sticker in the car "unused"? Or is she totally indifferent to the bumper sticker?

Did she intend to use it at the time of purchase, but lost that intent afterwards? Or does she gain utility from having the bumper sticker, but will only stick it, or "use" it in some other manner, when a certain situation arises?

And to be sure, she did not just forget about the bumper sticker?

Wait, if she intends to use the bumper sticker when a certain situation arises, why would she be indifferent to it? (I'm guessing this is a definition problem?)

She would prefer that, when that situation arises, she has the bumper sticker, right? Would she then stick the sticker onto her car? Is its purpose humour? To avoid liability (e.g. in an accident)?

Is the bumper sticker safety-related (like, for example, the "Baby on Board" stickers)? political/opinion-related? denoting a place where the car could have come from (like "Texas is bigger!")? just funny?

Wait, if she intends to use the bumper sticker when a certain situation arises, why would she be indifferent to it? (I'm guessing this is a definition problem?) She's indifferent to the content of the sticker. See below

She would prefer that, when that situation arises, she has the bumper sticker, right? Would she then stick the sticker onto her car? Yes to both
Is its purpose humour? To avoid liability (e.g. in an accident)? Its purpose? Neither

Is the bumper sticker safety-related (like, for example, the "Baby on Board" stickers)? No political/opinion-related? Definitely not denoting a place where the car could have come from (like "Texas is bigger!")? Possibly just funny? Also possibly. What exactly is on the sticker isn't relevant, so assume it's just something witty. Or, as quite a few bumper stickers are, pseudo-witty.

is the use of this sticker mandated by a law? No

WAGs fishing for OTRTs:

She currently has a white supremacy bumper sticker on her car, and will use this milder bumper sticker to cover it to avoid trouble if she ever needs to drive into a black neighbourhood. (Or more generally, is she planning to use this bumper sticker to cover something in a contingency?)

She is driving a Ford and planning to attend a Ford-enthusiast gathering, and will, if necessary, stick this bumper sticker somewhere memorable, to easily identify her Ford among all the other Fords in the unmarked driveway that is a makeshift parking lot. But she doesn't want to if she doesn't have to, cos why tarnish the absolute perfection that a Ford already is? (Or more generally, is she planning to use this bumper sticker to identify her car?)

She is going to shack up with her ex's stepfather in a shady drug-dealing red-light-district that happens to have a place selling bumper stickers nearby, so if anyone spots her, she'll whip out her bumper sticker and say "I was just here to buy this!" (Or more generally, is she planning to use this bumper sticker as an alibi or for misdirection?)

She is keeping the bumper sticker to use as a bandaid in case she ever gets a punctured tyre. #shittylifehacks

She is actually the 157th incarnation of Batman (the Bat is more than the mortal man under the mask; it is an everlasting symbol of justice). As we all know, Bats has contingency plans for everything and everyone, including his allies (should they turn heel) and himself, and particularly one Superman. These are not half-assed plans, but precisely detailed responses to every action that Supes might take. Operation Lane response R-148-36-13 details luring Supes to a rooftop with a 3D-printed model and high-fidelity distress cry of Lois Lane, whereupon Bats on an adjacent rooftop sucker-spears Supes with a Kryptonite spear in the back with calculated precision, causing Supes to arc through the air and land on a precisely-parked Batmobile, face-planting into the bumper sticker, which turns out to also be made of Kryptonite and shaped like a bat with the name "Martha" on it. The bat-bumper-sticker brands Supes' face with the Symbol of Bat-Justice and blinds his eyes, buying Bats enough time to close the distance and apply the coup-de-grace. Of course, since this requires some element of surprise, Bats has to keep this bumper sticker in a lead-lined compartment of his Batmobile under normal circumstances.

WAGs fishing for OTRTs:

She currently has a white supremacy bumper sticker on her car, and will use this milder bumper sticker to cover it to avoid trouble if she ever needs to drive into a black neighbourhood. This is actually really close to my solution. Nicely done.

****SPOILER****

She has a friend who is a bit of a cruel prankster and whose favorite trick is to put an offensive bumper sticker on someone's car (or something that's completely opposite to their beliefs or personality). In case this happens to her, she keeps a neutral bumper sticker in her car so she can cover it up.
