Is he examining an object? A person? Is his profession relevant? Is he pretending to have some other profession? Forensic detectives relevant? Does a comically large magnifying glass work better for this examination? Is he using the flashlight in order to: light dark places? Light general darkness? Blind someone? Illuminate his face? If so, in a spooky way?
Other people: one person? Two? More? One group? Two? More? Does he talk to anyone? To himself?

First, let me say hello to everyone, as this is my first post. And now...

Is the time of the day relevant? is it night? Is there any artificial lightning close? Does Richard need the torch just to be able to see the object? Is the object owned by group 2?
Are the identities of the members of each group relevant?
Is group 2 close to group 1?

**********************$$SPOILER$$**********************

In the late 70's, in the UK, my then boyfriend, Richard, had a beaten-up old Robin Reliant car of questionable colours (replaced panels resprayed with leftover end-of-cans), with the numberplate PIG 362. We used to ride in it with his friends in the evenings. We were repeatedly stopped by the Police as it looked atrocious, although it was in fact roadworthy, had MOT, tax and insurance, and Richard had a full driving license with no penalty points.

Richard said he had named his car "The Pig" after his friends the Police* and purchased the numberplate accordingly (but I think this was a lie). He would always tell them this, whenever they pulled him over to inspect the car and its documents. For some reason, this used to annoy them!

* (Note: In Britain the term 'pig' is a very offensive term for 'police officer').

On one occasion whilst the 'pigs' were giving his car a thorough going-over, trying to find something wrong with it, Richard produced a torch and a large theatrical magnifying glass with which he proceeded to inspect the outside of the police car and the Policemens' uniforms, all without touching them, of course. He subsequently did this on a number of occasions. They weren't very happy!

*****
