Did he injure himself in one way to avoid injuring himself in another way? Did he deliberately injure himself or another person? Did he act safely towards himself, or towards another person or persons? Was he trying to spare or save someone from danger, injury, something else? Rescue or first aid involved? Other person/persons involved in any way at all?

Was he being safe by: not throwing them? Placing them on a flat surface? Lighting them and retreating to a safe distance? Did he safely light any firecrackers? Did he light more than one at a time? If so, did he intend to do so? Did a firecracker malfunction? Function differently than the way he expected? Did a fuse burn too fast? Did sparks ignite something he did not intend? Relevant where he kept other firecrackers than the one he wanted to light? Did he light them with matches? A lighter? A gas torch?
Edit: did the firecrackers relevantly throw stuff around, apart from their own casings when exploding? Did he bury them? Confine them?

So he lit a firecracker when he wasn't intending to? Was the safety step taking a precaution to try to avoid the firecrackers being accidentally lit?

Special occasion or holiday relevant? Takes place around July 4th, but Irrel

Did he try to smoke something else? Yes Is smoking relevant at all? Yes
Was the powder in a loose pile? Yes but it was in a container Was it stuck on something? Was it jammed inside something?
Did he try to put out a cigarette in it? THIS. Put out some other fire in it?

That's a

****SPOILER****

From the "Things I Learn From My Patients" thread which has proved so fruitful a puzzle well:

If, on the Fourth of July, a firecracker fails to explode after you light its fuse, you should break it open to dump the powder out. Since powder is hazardous, you want to keep it all together in a pile in some sort of container or dish -- an ashtray is perfect for this, especially since powder is flammable and ashtrays are designed to hold flammable materials.

It is then a good idea, the next day, to put your cigarette out in that very same (unemptied) ashtray.
