[Balin] Werewolves of Burbank

Postby Balin » Tue Jan 23, 2018 2:14 pm

Even though Brian was on Twitter, my score remained the same. Explain.
Brian = H/A/M
"my" = me (Balin) = H/A/M

Is this an online game? Is it a game which exists offline (e.g. Monopoly, Poker etc)? Did you initially meet Brian online? Via Twitter? Facebook? A game?
Are we talking about a word game, cards, board game, gambling game, quiz, other?
Does “Twitter” refer to the site, app, etc that we think of as Twitter, or to the word “Twitter” of some other definition?

Is this game on the TV? Video? Computer game? Were you playing it at home, house, garden? Elsewhere? In the pub, a friend's house, garden, at an event?
Game = something you play and a person or persons win/s? Does it result in a score, or is there some other outcome which is defined as a win? Do you play singly or in a team?

Is it relevant or irrelevant to this puzzle that Brian has a Twitter account? Does the phrase "on Twitter" mean something else besides having an account, or being in the process of reading/posting on Twitter at a given time?

Is this game on the TV? Video? Computer game? Hmm... my sister records the score on her computer; the score is determined by something that airs on television
Were you playing it at home, house, garden? At home Elsewhere? In the pub, a friend's house, garden, at an event?
Game = something you play and a person or persons win/s? Yes Does it result in a score, or is there some other outcome which is defined as a win? A score Do you play singly or in a team? Singly

Is it relevant or irrelevant to this puzzle that Brian has a Twitter account? Relevant Does the phrase "on Twitter" mean something else besides having an account, or being in the process of reading/posting on Twitter at a given time? The important part is "reading/posting on Twitter at a given time." Good q

Disney relevant?

Brian is a previous winner of the game? The first or biggest winner? Or a winner for other notable reason/s?
Is the game played on a TV programme (such as a gameshow)? Or played elsewhere and televised?

Does the best score win you the game? It it a cumulative thing, e.g. over a number of weeks? Are there multiple winners?
Is it a game of skill, chance, something else?
Is Brian good-famous or bad-famous, after this event? Is he now someone people follow on Twitter due to his success at the game? Do people think their scores will increase if they follow Brian?

Does Brian give out the information before, during or after the game is played? Does he give scores? Tips? Does he study form?
Is he a quizmaster?
Does one tend to win or increase one's score when Brian is on Twitter but not when he isn't?
Is Brian responsible in any way for people’s scores?
Are people who play hoping they can be another Brian?
Brian isn’t just on Twitter, he has an online presence elsewhere - relevant?

Was it relevant that Brian was active on Twitter when the game was played? Or at another relevant time? Or just that he has an account? Was Brian on a TV show? A reality show?

Is this a game sold at a store? Is it a well-known or traditional game? Is it one your family made up? Is it a trivia/knowledge-testing game of any kind? If so, is there a trivia question related to Brian? Or does Brian provide information on Twitter that helps answer questions? Do you get points for finding something online?

Did you look for Brian on Twitter, hoping this would improve your score? Has Brian being on Twitter improved a score in the past?

Is it some kind of game which is televised, involving celebrities as players? The TV event is not a game (or the game), but the event does involve celebrities. Those celebrities do not play the game.
Do people at home take part in some way? Players of this game typically watch the event, but do not take part in it

Relevant to determine the purpose of the television program apart from the game? A documentary? Fundraiser? Show where the hosts/speakers tend to use "predictable" patterns, figures of speech, etc.? Relevant the rules of the game itself in conjunction with the show (i.e. what are you trying to determine/predict as a part of playing the game)? Am I making any FA's here (I've definitely made some assumptions...)?

Not these Show where the hosts/speakers tend to use "predictable" patterns, figures of speech, etc.? I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I'm going to say Yes Relevant the rules of the game itself in conjunction with the show (i.e. what are you trying to determine/predict as a part of playing the game)? YES, and the word "predict" is very important Am I making any FA's here (I've definitely made some assumptions...)? If I interpreted the questions right, I don't believe so

Hmmmm... just to make sure... were YOU actually playing the game? Yes - me, my dad, and my sister were the only (relevant) players

Comedy? Chat show? News? Fundraising?
Were the same celebs present on every show? Was it a series? Weekly? Daily?
Every time a celeb says a certain word, you get a point?
Does each of you have one celebrity you 'follow' in the game?
Can you change any of the criteria each episode?
Is this just played when the particular programme is on? Or other programmes too, or when they appear in newspapers magazines or online?

Was/is Brian connected with the Oscars in any way? (Can't remember if we've already established this or not)
Does Brian predict the results? Or does he just know what the results are going to be?
Do you and your family predict the results?
Does each of you have a particular celebrity you favour?
Did Brian accidentally or deliberately reveal something about the results beforehand?
Did Brian already know the results and forgot it hadn't been televised yet so gave away information?
Did he reveal a result about a particular celebrity, but that celeb wasn't 'your' celeb, therefore your score remained the same?

Is Brian the guy who gave out the wrong envelope at last year's Oscars, meaning the wrong film was announced as best picture? I remember something about him posting pictures on Twitter which might have been why he was distracted. Yes, exactly correct!

This isn't quite solved, but you've got a lot of information, so I'll update:

My family plays a game where we predict the results of the Oscars. Last year, even though Brian accidentally gave out the wrong envelope and La La Land was announced as Best Picture instead of actual winner Moonlight, "my score remained the same."

What's left to figure out is why "my score remained the same."

Did your family decide that La La Land was the correct answer as far as your game was concerned? Moonlight? Both/either were acceptable? Did they strike that category from your score because of the mistake?

OK, you chose LLL so you gained a point when it was announced, but lost the point again when ML was announced... so your score was back to whatever it was before the LLL/ML fiasco, i.e. remained the same... ?

Exploring the rules of your game...

Do you guess the winner for every category of the Oscars? Certain categories? Do you make all your guesses before the show starts? During it?
Do you make any other guesses other than who/what will win each category?

Do you score one point if you get the winner correct? More than one point? Varying amounts of points? Does it matter if more than one person has made the same guess?

Is there any way to gain points in your game other than by correctly guessing a winner?

Do you actually make the predictions? Do you get assigned them eg by picking nominees out of a hat?

Are any other categories relevant to this puzzle other than the best picture one?

If a similar mistake had been in announcing, say, best actress, or best sound editing, instead of best picture, could this same scenario have occurred?

Is it relevant that best picture is (I think) the last award announced? Relevant that it is one of the most highly anticipated?

Exploring the rules of your game...

Do you guess the winner for every category of the Oscars? Yes Certain categories?
Do you make all your guesses before the show starts? Before During it?
Do you make any other guesses other than who/what will win each category? Normally No, but we added one other guess that year which is the key to the puzzle

Do you score one point if you get the winner correct? Yes, for each category More than one point? Varying amounts of points? Does it matter if more than one person has made the same guess? No

Is there any way to gain points in your game other than by correctly guessing a winner? No, but see above

Do you actually make the predictions? Yes Do you get assigned them eg by picking nominees out of a hat? No

Are any other categories relevant to this puzzle other than the best picture one? In a way, see above

If a similar mistake had been in announcing, say, best actress, or best sound editing, instead of best picture, could this same scenario have occurred? Theoretically

Is it relevant that best picture is (I think) the last award announced? No Relevant that it is one of the most highly anticipated? No

Do you predict how many awards a certain film will win? Which film will win the most awards? Is the other guess to do with award winners? Nominees who don't win? Presenters? People in the audience? Running time of the show?

Was your 'one other guess' related to the prediction of an actor winning Best Actor for more than one film?

Did you guess how many La La Land would win? Moonlight?

So when Moonlight won instead of La La Land, that gave you the correct score for whichever of those you had guessed the total for? Which cancelled out your lost point for not guessing Moonlight correctly?

Did you guess how many La La Land would win? This Moonlight?

So when Moonlight won instead of La La Land, that gave you the correct score for whichever of those you had guessed the total for? Which cancelled out your lost point for not guessing Moonlight correctly? Exactly.

****SPOILER****

For the Academy Awards, my father, sister, and I all try to predict the winners. Last year, we added another guess for an extra point - how many awards La La Land would win; I guessed six. So when La La Land was initially announced as Best Picture winner because envelope handler Brian, on Twitter during the ceremony, gave the presenters the wrong envelope, I received a point for that guess. When it was realized that Moonlight had actually won, I lost that point... but gained another because I had correctly guessed how many awards La La Land would win, so my score stayed the same.

Well done Enjay, mimsy, and everyone else.
