[invisiblemimsy] 25 miles & a wild thing

Postby invisiblemimsy » Tue Jan 23, 2018 10:41 pm

Last week, I travelled 25 miles to a shop. I could have travelled 6 miles to a similar shop, but I didn't. What was my reason?

Did you want to go to this particular shop? Did you want to go this particular route? Direction? Did you walk? Bicycle? Drive? Take public transport? Did you want to use more time? Did you want to achieve something? Avoid something? Relevant what they sell? Relevant what you bought?

Is the relevant difference between the two shops:
Their location? What they sell? Whether they were open? Whether you could get to them? Their prices? Whether they carried a particular item? Whether a particular item would be in stock? The names of the shops? People you were meeting there? Something about the physical layout of the shops?

Did you end up not buying something relevant? Did you go there to look at something? If the shop had been 7 miles away instead of 25, would the puzzle still work?

Did you go there intending not to buy something? To maybe buy something? To interact with someone? To bring information back? Pricing relevant? Did you go there to look at something they had for sale? Did they have the exact same thing for sale in the closer shop? Did they sell: food? Drink? Furniture? Electronics? Vehicles? Trinkets? Jewelry? Books? Clothing? Shoes? Tools? Wood? Used things?

Are you well acquainted with the selection available at the closest store? Relevant? Do you normally buy these things? Any other people relevant to the puzzle? Do you think you will go to the farther store again? Do you make a decision on whether you will go there again, based on what you see there?

So, a RECAP here I think:
***********************************************************
$
$

You now know that both stores stock office and art supplies. I drive to either, but I prefer the one 25 miles away. When I go there, I have no intention of buying anything, and I just look at the things for sale... although occasionally I do buy something.

I'm yopishly looking for "something specific" (although there's a big FA there).

Irrelevant = prices, package sizes, exact items in stock, opening times, location, accessibility, names of the shops, people I might meet there...

Relevant = physical layout of the shops (although you don't know why), and something else.

You still need to discover the specific reason why I, ME, go to these particular shops on a regular basis, and what's different between the closer shop and the distant shop that makes me prefer the latter.

Do you ever buy things from either shop? Are you looking to see what you might buy in future? To see what kind of things they are selling? Do you run a similar shop and want to see what the competition is like?

Are you hoping they will have a particular thing?

Do you prefer the distant shop because of something they stock? Something they don't stock? The size of the shop? Do you find the further shop to be more open to you looking around without buying anything? Do they have an attractive facility, such as a coffee shop?

I have an unusual condition called ASMR, though ‘condition’ probably isn’t the right word. I get an extremely pleasant sensation (though ‘sensation’ probably isn’t the right word either, it’s sort of a feel-good mind thing) when I look at and touch stationery and art materials. I have other triggers too, including whispering, but stationery is the main one for me. I sometimes watch Youtube videos of people handling stationery. From time to time I go to a large branch of Ryman’s 25 miles away to get my ‘fix’. There is a much smaller shop nearby, but they don’t have the range, and they don’t like customers handling the goods.

Well done GalFisk for the solve, and to everyone else who took part. :)

That's the first time I've heard of someone experiencing ASMR from touching something. I've heard of many people who experience it from sounds, including sounds of people tapping on things, and from watching other people do things with their hands, but never from touching something themselves.

I've watched a bunch of ASMR videos, and while I find them relaxing, I don't get the tingles. Actually, in some of the "speaking in your ear" videos sounds cause a kind of tickly, buzzing vibration in my head, but I don't think that's it because obviously watching a silent video of someone folding shirts or whatever couldn't cause that, yet many people get ASMR from such videos--and that buzzing is not exactly pleasant, either.

Speaking of which, it seems me and some people I know might have like "reverse ASMR" in the tactile sense, where the texture/feel of certain things is weirdly UNpleasant. With me, I've noticed it with dry, fibrous cotton, like cotton balls. When pulled or squeezed, the fibers slide past each other to give a weird rubbing sensation--the best I can describe it is like the tactile equivalent of the screech when a nail is yanked out of a piece of wood. My dad hates the feeling of chewing undercooked green beans, when they "squeak"--I think it's probably something similar.

Interesting! I don't get the unpleasant feeling/reverse ASMR you mention. My daughter has this too; she often puts youtube ASMR videos on to get to sleep. She mostly gets it from sounds, especially whispering or speaking very quietly. She also has synaesthesia; she sees numbers and letters as colours, and sometimes scents. All of this is very strange!
