[invisiblemimsy] For the love of Alice

Postby invisiblemimsy » Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:13 pm

Where does she live, and what is his name?

Does the man immediately take a tumble when he gets there?

I may have half of it - check PMs

Is this man in a song? A work of fiction? Does he do this once? Does he need to go this distance in order to see her?
Silly WAG: is his phone (or other comm device) charged using a treadmill, and he often walks on it in order to power the device and have video calls with her?

Is this lyric relevant?
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

"Living next door to Alice" relevant?

YES, and see above answer to KingLouie

"Living next door to Alice" relevant? No, nothing in the title is relevant. Being fanciful, I just decided to give the girlfriend the name 'Alice'.

Right, for some reason I thought the question was asking for her name and not his... whoops.

Is the musical/film "Sunshine on Leith" relevant?

Is his name Charlie? Craig?

Are we deducing where she lives based on the fact that he has to walk 1000 miles to get there? Does he relevantly pause for some reason after the first 500? Does he take a boat?

Does he end up 1000 miles from where he started? Does he circumnavigate the globe?

Does he ever pause? Rest? Yes, he rests every night and might take the odd day off Consider giving up? He might do but irrel Consider using a different method of transportation? Well no,
for the purpose of the puzzle his mission is to walk 1000 miles not drive/ride

UPDATE - You just need to find his name!

THINGS YOU'VE DISCOVERED SO FAR

a) The puzzle is inspired by The Proclaimers’ song ‘I’m Gonna Be’ (‘500 miles’). The only things from that song which are relevant to this puzzle are
1) A man walks 1000 miles to see his girlfriend, and
2) Since the Proclaimers are Scottish, he starts somewhere on Great Britain, probably Scotland, though it doesn’t matter exactly where. You established that HE lives on an island, and GB is in fact that island.

b) You established that she lives 1000 miles away from where he starts, and he walks in one direction. He does not walk on land the whole time, nor on ice or bridges. Something similar to floating is relevant. He does not use another mode of transportation because his mission is to walk. (Clue: this paragraph is important.)

c) She lives in Europe somewhere, and she stays put while he walks to her. “On a boat” is one answer to where she lives.
(The other possibility for where she lives is "across the sea")...
I’ll accept “ON A BOAT” for the answer - so that’s half the puzzle done!

d) Re his identity: his age and profession are YESISH-ly relevant, and he has ‘a certain skill’.
You are so close, m’dears!

****************$POILER*******************************

This puzzle is loosely based on The Proclaimers' song 'I Wanna Be', in which a man walks 1000 miles to see his girlfriend.

“But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To fall down at your door.”

The band is Scottish, so the man starts from somewhere in Scotland. Since the length of Great Britain (from John O’Groats to Land’s End) is 874 miles on foot, she must live in, on, or across the sea. As he is walking, he must be Jesus to be able to walk on water.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and to wwhere for the final solve!
