Was it to do with their religion, or to keep the carpet clean, or so their shoes could be examined, or to do with their shoe sizes, or to prevent contamination?
Were they candidates for employment? Was anything forensic or crime-related going on?
Were the candidates HAM, HAF? How many candidates were there (can we invoke the list of numbers please?

Relevant what they candidated for? For different political parties? Are the candidates asked to remove their shoes once they were togwther? In front of the voters? Were they asked to remove their shoes for hours/minutes/seconds/days? Was it for the candidates' benefit? Safety? Could they refuse to do it? Were they taking a plane and security controls were required?

Were them japanese candidates at a dinner? Is it relevant their quality of candidates in the request of removing shoes? I mean was it asked to anyone? To anyone who was going to perform the same acrion as the candidates?

Was it relevant how many people were present already in the room? Relevant how many candidates were present? How many interviewers were present? Were their shoes dirty? Clean? Not dirty as such but they wanted to avoid possible contamination? They wanted to avoid adding to the sounds in the room? They could make some noise but not with their feet? Was the floor or something else sensitive to something other than sound? Movement?

Was the noise already present in the room? Or was it silent, but sometimes had noise there?

Candidates for an orchestra? They were auditioning to see whether their musical abilities were strong enough?
Simply checking to make sure their shoes wouldn’t do something? Would do something?
Were they looking at the shoes, or at the candidates’ feet?
Removing their shoes so that if they tapped their feet along to the music, they wouldn’t make sounds?
Were they to be session musicians or permanent members of the orchestra?
Checking their shoe sizes for a matching uniform?

Were they asked to take the bit through their feet (don't know if it is the right expression...basically keep the rythm with the feet)? Were they asked to keep the shoes off because they were too much and if any of them keep the rythm with the feet it would have been a mess?

Is the shoes off part to check their abilities? If they recognize how did their "shoes sound" like? Not to disturb others playing? Does the ability tested here mainly involve: hearing sounds? Playing a specific instrument? Recognize a sound? Feeling comfortable in embarassing situations? Keeping playing music even if in difficulty?

Werw they asked to take off their shoes on a stage? In a particular moment? While playing?

One per time? All together? Relevant? Is walk quietly an ability to test? Is rythm the main feature tested through this "shoes off test"? Were others playing while they were there? Did they play the part of the public? Did they play as well? One per time? All together? Relevant? Were they dressed like other musicians? Relevant? Is the relevant part of the shoes off test when they are walking to take their instrument? While they are playing their instrument? After they have played it?

Is posture relevant? Possibility of slide with socks on the floor relevant? Were they examined mainly while walking to their instrument? Is it an examination like they walk on the stage and play the instrument in front of some judges?

Were they asked to do something before playing a part from taking their shoes off? Did they want to see how they take off their shoes? Working through the knods relevant? Could the shoes off test be considwred to be failed or passed as soon as they've taken their shoes off? Would the puzzle work were they asked to take their shoes off and put them again after a minute? Is the shoes off test relevant once they put the shoes back? Relevant where they were asked to put theur shoes once taken off?

Do they know already, or are they told, why they need to take their shoes off? Is it the judges' requirement that they remove their socks? Someone else's requirement? Are their feet being examined? Are their socks? Is it to make sure they don't have something in their socks or on their feet? Is it relevant to their actual audition? Is it to test their commitment? Will it make a difference to whether they are hired or not? If they are hired, will they need to remove their socks during practice? During performance?

So they take their shoes off, walk to a location, play an instrument, and then walk away, right? Do they wlk up to an instrument? Carry an instrument? Relevant? Is the performance recorded? Is it judged blindly? Is this done so that no difference between candidates can be heard based on footwear or gait? Are the candidates required to do anything except take their shoes off, walk, and play?

They take their shoes off so as not to disturb the other people being auditioned, or the judges? Either that, or a concert is already taking place, same reason?

Does walking quietly ensure fairness in the judgement of their talent? Is it for the benefit of the jurors? Relevant how many judge them? Relevant how the blind judging is set up? How the order of candidates is picked? Would it work if they instead walked on a thick, soft carpet? Time spent walking relevant? Nervousness?

Do the jurors use the silence for something relevant? Do they know when the next candidate will start playing? Length of silence between candidates relevant? Do candidates relevantly play more than once? So jurors cannot know if the next piece is played by the same person or anothet?

Were any of the jurors related to any of the candidates? Their mums and dads? Did each candidate have to play the same piece of music? Might the shoes be visible underneath the screen? Or else, might the sound of the candidates' footprints give away who was who? The noise that was sometimes present, was that the jurors talking to each other?

So all of this was to avoid the jurors favouring their own chidren?

Sorry, I meant footSTEPS ... might those give away who was who if they had their shoes on?

Were any of the jurors the teachers of the candidates?

Was this some kind of examination, or just auditions? Or was something else as well going on? Was it protocol for the candidates to remove their shoes in this situation?

Is there some kind of test of the jurors too? Are the jurors adults?

Was all or some of this to prevent the jurors favouring one or other of the children?

Was it to prevent any of the children from making a noise when the current child was playing?

Apologies if this has been asked but is it because of the difference between the sounds of women's and men's shoes so the blind judging couldn't be open to accusations of favouring one sex over another?

* * * SPOILER * * *

Peter,

Trust you to come in late and solve it! Well done.

'Apologies if this has been asked but is it because of the difference between the sounds of women's and men's shoes so the blind judging couldn't be open to accusations of favouring one sex over another?'

Correct.

In the 1970s and 1980s, US orchestras began using blind auditions. Candidates are situated on a stage behind a screen to play for a jury that cannot see them.

Even when the screen is only used for the preliminary round, it has a powerful impact; researchers have determined that this step alone makes it 50% more likely that a woman will advance to the finals. And, indeed, the screen has also been demonstrated to be the source of a surge in the number of women being offered positions.

By the way, even a screen doesn’t always yield a gender blind event. Screens keep juries from seeing the candidates move into position, but the telltale sounds of a woman’s shoes allegedly influenced some jury members such that aspiring musicians were instructed to remove their footwear before coming onto the stage.
