[invisiblemimsy] Face the Music

Postby invisiblemimsy » Sun Apr 08, 2018 10:55 pm

True Story:- I once played a single note during a Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall. That night, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring had an extra note in it, which everybody heard as it was during a quiet bit. How did this happen?

No musical knowledge is required for this puzzle.

The road to solved puzzles is paved with fun ideas - some more realistic than others :P

Is the extra note the one you played? Is the instrument you play relevant? Were you relevantly reading sheet music? Had you realised the note was going to be out of place before you played it? Was it some sort of code or signal? Had something gone awry with the performance or your instrument?

Was it a triangle? A string, wind or percussion instrument? Was it actually a musical note?

Were you on stage? Were you supposed to be? Were you one of the spectators?

Did you fart, sneeze, blow your nose or anything of that nature?

Xylophone? Something you hit with: hands? Sticks? Clubs? Something you shake? Hit with another instrument? Is it handheld? Did you play this note using the nirmal playing technique for this instrument?

Did you hit it? Stroke it? Poke it? Scratch it? Fiddle with it? Drop it? Disassemble it? Drop a part of it? Make it resonate along with another sound? Blow on it? Break it? Look at it the wrong way?

So basically, all that remains is: What was the object I dropped onto the xylophone, which caused the extra note?

was it the stick? No, there are two sticks to a xylophone, and both were in the hands of the xylophonist. Think about items I (or my friends) might have had at a concert.

Was it a programme? Opera glasses? The popsicle stick from the snack you got at intermission? A small maglite torch which you used to find your way to your seat?

sorry, kaylee kitteh thought mimsy was the xylophonist. didn't read far back enough I guess. XD

a peanut? piece of popcorn? other food item?

The only concert I've ever been to, other than a Heather Dale house concert that is, was a show by Faith Hill where I ended up having four seizures. I didn't eat anything. Or drop anything. I've never been to anything like this

sorry, kaylee kitteh thought mimsy was the xylophonist. Well, it could be said that for that one note, I WAS the xylophonist. Not THE xylophonist though. didn't read far back enough I guess. XD

a peanut? nearly...piece of popcorn? other food item? Yes. This is pretty darn close, so I'm going to $POIL.

*******************$POILER*****************

Way back in the mists of time when I was 14, I went on a school trip to the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, London. We were all up in the gallery, i.e. a balcony right up in the roof of the Hall. My friends and I were passing a bag of boiled sweets with quite a lot of messing about. I accidentally flicked a sweet over the balcony and down onto the xylophone. As I said above, it was during a quiet bit, and to add insult to injury, we couldn't stop giggling after that.

Well done to Wiz, JenBurdoo, Balin, Galfisk, and to KayleeArafinwiel for the final solve :-)
