[Balin] Next time, book with AAA

Postby Balin » Mon Apr 16, 2018 8:09 pm

Raymond is traveling with hundreds of other men and women to a certain location. While Raymond is not making the trip for the same reason as the others, it could also be said that he is making the trip for the same reason. What's going on?
Raymond = H/A/M

Are all the other people gooing to the location for the same reason as each other?
Are all the people starting from the same place? Are they all travelling together?
Is it relevant what mode of transport they are using?
Is a pilgrimage involved?
Do these people go to this place regularly? Occasionally? Once only?
Do the people intend to stay there once they get there? If so, for a few hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Forever?
Are the people traveling within the same country? Internationally?

Are they travelling by land? sea? sky?

Are they travelling to outer space?

Are they making some kind of metaphysical journey, passing into the afterlife or similar?

Is Raymond the captain of a ship? Spaceship? transporting the others? Is it a colony ship? (WiZ got me thinking of space)

If outer space is irrelevant, is this taking place from one part of an empire to another? The British Empire?

Does Raymond also stay for a few years or so? Do they all come back eventually or do some stay behind? Did they intend to stay there forever? Was there something which made them return?
Relevant their nationality/ies?

Are they travelling by land? sea? This sky?

Are they travelling to outer space? No

Are they making some kind of metaphysical journey, passing into the afterlife or similar? No

Is Raymond the captain of a ship? No Spaceship? No transporting the others? But they are being "transported" Is it a colony ship? YES, and this puzzle is going to die fairly soon (WiZ got me thinking of space) Not a spaceship, but nice leap

If outer space is irrelevant, is this taking place from one part of an empire to another? The British Empire? Yes to both...

Does Raymond also stay for a few years or so? Yes Do they all come back eventually or do some stay behind? Most stay behind Did they intend to stay there forever? Not initially Was there something which made them return? Most didn't return
Relevant their nationality/ies? See above

Are they being transported to Australia? from England? Were they convicts? Did they intend to come back once their term ended, but by then they had settled into their new home and decided to stay?
Or, is it the Pilgrims to America?

Are they being transported to Australia? from England? Were they convicts? Yes to all
Did they intend to come back once their term ended, but by then they had settled into their new home and decided to stay? Yes (but this isn't as important to the puzzle)
Or, is it the Pilgrims to America? No

so is Raymond the captain of the transport ship? a crew member? a convict? if a convict, was he convicted of a different crime than the others?

WAG: is he the relative of a convict and going with them to Australia for support?

Or... *has a sneaking suspicion that not only Botany Bay, but "Botany Bay" is relevant...Marc Gunn, that is*

Is he a garrison soldier? Bligh or another temporary governor of the colony? Would he, like the convicts, expect to settle permanently after their sentence or his enlistment is over?

so is Raymond the captain of the transport ship? No a crew member? No a convict? No if a convict, was he convicted of a different crime than the others? No, but this is somewhat headed the right way

WAG: is he the relative of a convict and going with them to Australia for support? No

Or... *has a sneaking suspicion that not only Botany Bay, but "Botany Bay" is relevant...Marc Gunn, that is* No

Is he a garrison soldier? No Bligh or another temporary governor of the colony? No Would he, like the convicts, expect to settle permanently after their sentence or his enlistment is over? He does expect to stay permanently, yes, but he has no "sentence" or "enlistment"

Were they ALL convicts apart from Raymond? ? Was this the Hougemont? Earlier boats, relevant? Terms of their sentences: 1 year, ... [LTPF list of numbers] ... life? Actual crimes relevant? Is THE reason their crimes/transportation sentences, or is there another reason? Has Raymond actually committed a crime? Has he got away with it so far? Do the others think/know he is a criminal? Has he been falsely accused, convicted? Do the others think/know he is innocent? Does anyone in Britain think/know he is innocent?

Presumably, we need to find out why he is going since he has no sentence/enlistment? Is there something else we need to find out too?

Is THE reason their crimes/transportation sentences, or is there another reason? Yes, they were transported for their crimes Has Raymond actually committed a crime? Yes Has he got away with it so far? Yes Do the others think/know he is a criminal? Presumably Has he been falsely accused, convicted? No/No Do the others think/know he is innocent? Probably not Does anyone in Britain think/know he is innocent? Possibly

Presumably, we need to find out why he is going since he has no sentence/enlistment? Yes Is there something else we need to find out too? No, that piece of information is the key to the solution

Does he think his crime will be discovered anyway? Is there someone on the boat he wants to be with? Is there someone back home that he wants to avoid? Is his crime serious enough that he would get the death penalty if he stayed at home, eg rape or murder?

Does Raymond want the other people on the boat to think he is a convict? Is he being treated as a convict while on the boat? When he reaches Australia, does he plan to do whatever the convicts are sent to do? Does he plan to escape? Start a new life in Australia?

Did Raymond board the boat of his own free will?

Is his crime stowing away? And therefore he is being 'punished' by being shipped off to Australia like a regular convict?

****SPOILER****

Raymond is a stowaway on a convict ship headed for Australia. In other words, although he wasn't sent to Australia for committing a crime, he committed a crime that caused him to be transported to Australia.

Thanks, Balin. Good one.

The last two puzzles I've solved have involved Australians behaving unethically. Make of that what you will.
