Were the people present when the cat was startled? Were they laughing at the cat's reaction? Did they do something which caused the cat to startle? Deliberately? Group of people = HAM, HAF, HCM, HCF? Number of people relevant? Was the cat OK?

Are the people laughing because they find something funny? Are they relieved? Is their laughter genuine and not forced? Is some sort of scientific/social scientific experiment going on?

Are they laughing at whatever made the noise? Did they themselves make the noise?

They started laughing seconds later right? Did they expect the laud noise to happen? If so were they prepared to it and so did not realize that the cat had been surprised by it?

Ok...supposing people was present when the cat had been surprised by the noise...(I premise in order not to create useless FA in case):
Did the group of people hear the noise? Was the cat the only cat present? Were there other cats? Was the cat on the legs of someone present? Relevant the reaction of the cat? Was the cat the only one surprised by the noise? Relevant where the noise came from? A tunder? A voice? A scream?(if the latter a scream of pain? A fake scream?...) a cannon? A drill? Was the noise sudden? A plane? Something turned on? Lawmnowner? Vacuum cleaner? lawnmower? Fireworks? Did people wear headphones?

Oh...so...may I invoke the list of music typologies? Otherwise I get crazy xD...like punk? Electro? Commercial? Traditional music? Indian music? Relevant the instrument with which it was played? Is it an ancient instrumebt? Is it a guitar? A drum a trumpet? Piano? Was the instrument that surprised the cat one of those mentioned?

Was it played by a band? By an homless? A street performer? By an orchestra? A pianist?

So group of people = public and orchestra right? Was it an open theatre? Was the cat on the stage? Did the cat jump on stage? On the head of someone? Among public? Did public burst out laughing because the surprised cat jumped by the surprise? Did the loud sound last a lot? Like minutes? Seconds?

Was the public able to see the cat before he got surprised?

So group of people = public and orchestra right? No, actually. Orchestra yes, public no (in reality, the public was probably also there, but for simplicity of the puzzle I'm saying they weren't) Was it an open theatre? As in outdoor? No/Irrel Was the cat on the stage? At some point Did the cat jump on stage? See below On the head of someone? No Among public? No Did public burst out laughing because the surprised cat jumped by the surprise? No Did the loud sound last a lot? Like minutes? Seconds? A second or so, maybe less

Was the public able to see the cat before he got surprised? No

Was the cat asleep when startled? Probably Was the cat on or in an instrument? No Was it sleeping inside a bass drum? No Grand piano? No
Did the cat relevntly: yowl? Jump? Run? Scramble? Make an instrument make noise? Run/yowl

Was the orchestra able to see the cat before he got surprised? Is the shape of the theatre/stage relevant? Was the cat, before getting surprised, above the orchestra? Below it? Between the members of the orchestra? Behind the curtain separating the stage from the public?
Was the orchestra below the stage? Was the orchestra surprised as well when the cat got surprised? Relevant that orchestra director (supposing there is one) is turned to the opposite side w.r.t. the orchestra members? If so, were all of them able to see the cat getting surprised?

Did the cat run from the stage? Onto the stage? Onto & across Was it startled by the orchestra starting to play? By one loud chord in the middle of a song Did it climb anything relevant? No Drag anything relevant? No Relevant why it was there in the first place? It was a stray theater cat

Was the orchestra able to see the cat before he got surprised? No Is the shape of the theatre/stage relevant? The exact shape, No Was the cat, before getting surprised, above the orchestra? This, and relevant... but beware FA Below it? Between the members of the orchestra? Behind the curtain separating the stage from the public? FA
Was the orchestra below the stage? Yes Was the orchestra surprised as well when the cat got surprised? They were surprised at the cat, but not surprised by the chord Relevant that orchestra director (supposing there is one) is turned to the opposite side w.r.t. the orchestra members? No If so, were all of them able to see the cat getting surprised? No, but they'd have heard the cat

So to recap...did the cat jump onto a member of the orchestra? was the cat on the floor of the stage and the orchestra below was playing? Did the cat fall?

J suppose the music was quite loud right?...relevant how orchestra was able to hear the cat being surprised? Is the meowing of the cat relevant? Did it fit in the sound made by the orchestra? Was the sound made perfect? I mean...as it should have been, without mistakes and so on..?

So to recap...did the cat jump onto a member of the orchestra? No was the cat on the floor of the stage and the orchestra below was playing? Yes Did the cat fall? No

J suppose the music was quite loud right?... Yes relevant how orchestra was able to hear the cat being surprised? I'd guess the cat screeched really loudly Is the meowing of the cat relevant? Yes Did it fit in the sound made by the orchestra? No
Was the sound made perfect? I mean...as it should have been, without mistakes and so on..? Do you mean "was the orchestra's playing correct"? Yes.

You have an underlying FA.

Was there someone singing as well as the orchestra playing? Did someone make a joke like "That cat sings better than the performer"? Probably not, but that would be funny!

Yes, I meant like this when I asked the question about possible mistakes of the orchestra! :)

Is the FA that there was no curtain? That there were members of the orchestra even above the stage? Maybe the orchestra thought that someone on the stage meowed?

Shape of the stage relevant? Was the stage empty? Was there something a part from the cat on the stage? Was there only one cat? Did the meowing of the cat provoke the response of other cats? Relevant? Did it resemble a chorus? Was the orchestra rehearsing? If so relevant which "operetta"? Like "au clair de la lune" and the cat suddenly meowed? Was the scene considered funny because it fitted with what was played by the orchestra? Because it resembled something relevant? Was there someone on the stage a part from the cat (dancer/performers/actors?)?

Was there someone singing as well as the orchestra playing? Yes, multiple people; FA cleared Did someone make a joke like "That cat sings better than the performer"? No Probably not, but that would be funny! Yes it would!

Is the FA that there was no curtain? No That there were members of the orchestra even above the stage? Close - there were singers/performers on the stage Maybe the orchestra thought that someone on the stage meowed? No

Shape of the stage relevant? No Was the stage empty? No Was there something apart from the cat on the stage? Yes, performers & set pieces Was there only one cat? Yes Did the meowing of the cat provoke the response of other cats? No Relevant? No Did it resemble a chorus? No Was the orchestra rehearsing? No but the puzzle would still work if it was a full rehearsal If so relevant which "operetta"? It may help, but you don't need to know the exact operetta for the solution Like "au clair de la lune" and the cat suddenly meowed? No Was the scene considered funny because it fitted with what was played by the orchestra? Not the orchestra, but OTRT! Because it resembled something relevant? See previous Was there someone on the stage apart from the cat (dancer/performers/actors?)? Actors/performers

Did the scene fit with the song lyrics? Yes. With what the actors did?

****SPOILER****

(As recounted on TV Tropes:)

A performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore was interrupted when a sudden loud orchestral chord in the number "Carefully on tiptoe stealing" startled a theater cat, which ran screaming across the stage. The cast might have been able to recover and carry on with the show, if only the next two lines hadn't been:

CHORUS: "Goodness me, why what was that?"
DICK DEADEYE: "Silent be, it was the cat!"

And cue complete cast corpsing.
