[WiZ] No, he does not own a horse

Postby WiZ » Sun Apr 29, 2018 9:58 pm

One Saturday, a man goes to a bar looking for romance. The next Saturday, he goes to a basketball game wearing a Jack Daniels T-shirt. He is not especially fond of basketball or whisk[e]y, so why is he there?

Does he go to the basketball game as a result of something that happened at the bar? Is he relevantly gay, straight or other? Does he go alone to each place? Does he meet a person on either Saturday, if so, the same person?

So did he find romance during the first Saturday? Was he planning to meet someone at the game? Relevant that he was wearing that specific shirt? Did he intend someone to recognize him by that?

Did he overhear something at the bar? Get told something? Experience something? By wearing the shirt, did he want to tell something about himself?

Was he still looking for romance at the basketball game? Was he told something positive? Negative? About himself? About the other person/people? Told by: a person speaking? Something he got shown? Some kind of text somewhere? Was he told something like he'd have a better chance meeting someone at a basketball game wearing a Jack Daniels shirt?

Anything about the Jack Daniels label relevant ? Old No. 7 ? Sour Mash? Tennessee?

Is he or anyone other than the original whiskey manufacturer relevantly called Jack Daniels?

What he was shown: Something encouraging? Something like another person being successful? Happy? Was the text on an image of some kind? Poster? In a video? Was it just text? Or also pictures? Was a relevant other person talking about themselves? Someone else? Did "something he got shown" mention one (relevant) person? Two people? More?

Was he wearing the T shirt to stand out? So someone would spot him? Like, wearing a handkerchief in your top pocket? Or to blend in? Were there others wearing JD shirts? Would it have been ok to wear a Gilbey’s gin t shirt? Was he a spy? A policeman? In disguise?

Can we call the protagonist Tom?

Was Tom wearing anything relevant on his trip to the bar? Any other iconic t-shirts relevant?

Is the person that showed Tom the text a man? relevant? Is it someone he was supposed to meet? or was it another customer? the barman? Is he (the person Tom encountered) wearing a Jack Daniels t-shirt? Is Tom ? Does he share his ideas with Tom of how to be successful in romance?

Was the text he was shown on an app? any dating websites relevant? Was Tom supposed to meet someone at the bar? A blind date?

Even though he's not looking for romance at the game does he find it?

Is a crime committed in the context of the puzzle? Is our hero‘s job relevant? Is he going to the basketball match in the Jack Daniels T-shirt in order to make money? Are any persons named Jack or Daniel relevant?

Had he owned the Jack Daniels T-shirt before he went to the bar? Did he buy it afterwards? Did he steal it? Borrow it? Find it? get it as a gift?

Peter

Can we call the protagonist Tom? Yes.

Was Tom wearing anything relevant on his trip to the bar? no Any other iconic t-shirts relevant? no

Is the person that showed Tom the text a man? no relevant? yes (assuming that Tom is a heterosexual) Is it someone he was supposed to meet? Ino or was it another customer? yes the barman? no Is she (the person Tom encountered) wearing a Jack Daniels t-shirt? not relevantly Is Tom ? Most probably not Does she share his ideas with Tom of how to be successful in romance? no

Was the text he was shown on an app? no any dating websites relevant? no (that's another puzzle) Was Tom supposed to meet someone at the bar? no A blind date? no

Even though he's not looking for romance at the game does he find it? irrelevant; assume no, as this line of questioning would only distract

I had to think about my answers to questions relating to 'blind dates' and 'being supposed to meet someone' - it's not impossible that the puzzle could work under these circumstances, but I believe much more likely if it wasn't.

Has Tom won the T-shirt in a contest? A pub quiz? Has he acquired the ticket to the basketball game the same way as the T-shirt?

So both were prices from the same contest? Won at the bar? Was the message inspirational? Something like how he should appreciate the gifts he gets? Something about trying new things, going to new places ect?

Did he win the prices before going to the bar? After? During his visit? He met a woman at the bar who showed him something, right? Was she relevant to the prizes somehow? Did she work at the same place/company/ect. hosting/running the contest?

The contest: was it a lottery? A competition involving skill? A quiz? Did Tom buy tickets for it?

The woman at the bar: can we call her Jane? Was Tom trying to pick her up? Was he turned down? Did Jane say something to him that was meant to be a plain brush-off? Or was she discouraging him from trying to pick up women in this bar? And it could be interpreted as „try the contest/lottery instead“?

Did either Tom or Jane use an expression like 'you can't win a raffle if you don't buy a ticket' with regard to Tom trying to chat up Jane?

LemonCurry

Did Jane give Tom a fake phone number? Which actually was a call-in number for the contest? Direct hit!

***** SPOILER *****

At the bar, Tom met Jane and asked for her phone number. To brush him off, Jane gave him a fake number: the number of the local radio station. When Tom called the number, he was caller number 6 and won the daily prize: basketball tickets and a Jack Daniels T-shirt.

Congratulations, LemonCurry, on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing!
