[WiZ] A Stiff Drink Makes for a Hard Puzzle

Postby WiZ » Tue May 22, 2018 9:13 pm

A man is at home, alone, enjoying a drink, when he suddenly sits completely still, hardly daring to breathe for a few seconds. He then stands up and spends 5 minutes worriedly checking and searching the room around him. Eventually, he calms down and finishes his drink. He is healthy and nothing wrong or unusual is happening around him. What prompted his behaviour?

BOATS. Caveat Earlispoilor.

Is the behaviour prompted by something he sees? Hears? Smells? Remembers? Figures out? Something about his drink?

Is it relevant what the drink is?

When he searches the room is he hoping to find something? To not find something? Does he calm down because of the results of his checking and searching?

Is the drink alcoholic? Water? Milk? Juice? Fizzy? Does it have ice in? Is it something that a normal person might drink? Relevant what he is drinking out of?

Does he hear a sound coming from his drink? A sound from elsewhere that alarms him when coupled with something about his drink? Does he not hear something relevant?

Does he worry that the drink might harm him? Might be poisonous? That he has lost something?

Did he worry he might have confused something else similar-looking for his drink? Did the drink taste unusual? Did the sound remind him of something else? Did he think the sound was coming from somewhere else than the drink? When searching the room, did he look for a specific object? Was he worried he had lost this? That something was wrong with this?

Is it fizzy? Fizzy water? Is he drinking out of a cup, bottle, mug, glass, something else? Is the shape of the receptacle relevant? Does he have tinnitis, hallucinations, something else coming from himself? Is he worried about the sound? Frightened? Does he think there is someone or something else there?

Was the sound he heard the sound of liquid fizzing? Should we explore further what he was drinking beyond that it was fizzy? Did he think the noise was bring made by an object? Person? Animal? Was there something relevant about his situation at the time that made the noise worrying?

Did he calm down because he realised the sound had come from the drink? Because he completed his search to his satisfaction?

Should we find out more about where the man lives? Is there anything relevant about his house? Is something about his situation particularly dangerous? Is he in space? On a submarine?
Was he in a situation where any noise would have been concerning? Was he concerned because he thought he was alone and the noise suggested he wasn't?

He entertained this possibility - but this wasn't the only possibility

Did he think he was imagining the noise? Did he think that something in the room was making the noise? Was the worried checking and searching an attempt to find the source of the noise?

Has he heard a similar noise before in relevant circumstances?

Is he hardly daring t breathe in case someone or something heard him? In case he sets something off? Just as a genral response to being worried?

Is he worried that he will suffer physical injury? Death? That someone will? That he will suffer material loss? That he has lost something? That someone means him ill will?

Did he think he was imagining the noise? no Did he think that something in the room was making the noise? Most likely Was the worried checking and searching an attempt to find the source of the noise? yes

Has he heard a similar noise before in relevant circumstances? no!

Is he hardly daring t breathe in case someone or something heard him? In case he sets something off? Just as a genral response to being worried? no to all

Is he worried that he will suffer physical injury? Death? That someone will? That he will suffer material loss? That he has lost something? That someone means him ill will? None of these are explicitly relevant; he senses the possibility of danger, but isn't thinking of any specific threat

Had he ever had a fizzy drink before? Did he know that fizzy drinks make noise before he drank it?
Had he recently been cured of deafness and was still learning what noises sound like?

Had he recently been cured of deafness and was still learning what noises sound like? *Gloria*

***** SPOILER *****

The man had recently been cured of deafness. He went home and had a bottle of soda to celebrate. Not knowing that carbonated beverages made a fizzing noise, he frantically searched his house to find the source of the worrying hiss, before realising it was in his drink all along!

Congratulations, Enjay, on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing!

That wasn't an Earlispoilor - your line of questioning led incrementally to that guess.

Peter's WAG was
"Has the man heard of a report of a highly poisonous snake escaping from somewhere and he confuses the sound of the gas escaping his drink with a the serpent's hissing?", which I enjoyed.
