[WiZ] That's Numberwang!

Postby WiZ » Wed May 23, 2018 10:50 pm

I just read a 26-digit number, and an explanation as to its significance. The number was unfamiliar to me and followed no mathematical pattern. I am not possessed of an exceptional memory, but I was able to perfectly replicate the number immediately without thinking (without looking at it, of course). How did I manage this? And what was the number?

True story that happened to me, so any and all guesses are welcome!

Hiya Wiziwig!

Is it significant that the number is 23 digits? Would you remember it if it was 22 or 24 digits? Do the digits refer to 23 components even if they are collectively known as one item?

Hiya Wiziwig! Hi, Lynne! How wonderful to see you again.

Is it significant that the number is 23 digits? 26 - and there is a reason for its being this length Would you remember it if it was 22 or 24 digits? not as well Do the digits refer to 23 components even if they are collectively known as one item? The number was presented as a single item, and there was no obvious set(s) of components above the single-digit level

Do you change the wood from it's normal state into something else? I'm trying to think of what is creative but not producing an object of sorts... And then it's got to relate to 26 numbers....

Or is the wood here just the table that you use to do your creative activity?

Do you change the wood from it's normal state into something else? no I'm trying to think of what is creative but not producing an object of sorts... Ay, there's the rub And then it's got to relate to 26 numbers.... This is the harder part. Answer the first and you can work towards the second.

And it's even longer since I've solved one all on my tod. Anything else to work out? That depends on how generous I'm feeling.

I'm feeling generous.

***** SPOILER *****

I read that to play the song Mary had a Little Lamb on a touch-tone phone, one would dial the number 3212-333-222-399-3212-333-322321. I closed the window, picked up my desk phone, and tried to play the song by ear. The number displayed on my Skype for Business window showed that I had done it correctly.

Congratulations, Lynne, on a brilliant solo effort!

Thank you, that was fun. I hadn't got as far as thinking of touch tone phones. I thought it might be some grand symphony you'd play on the piano!

Just as a matter of interest someone I knew a long time ago wrote a book on Bach and Riddle of Numbers. The theory was that he used a number alphabet (A = 1 etc) as symbols and structural devices in his music. Way over my head so I'm glad that the puzzle was limited to a much simpler idea.
