One sign? Did it have text? If so, the name of a place? Did it cause hilarity in its vicinity? In the news? On the web? Did it show signs (pun intended) of incompetency?

was it hilarious because of the scenario? Was it placed in its original place? With no modifications? Was it at a crossroad? In a street? Was there something near? A shop? An house? Was a picture of the sign taken? If so relevant what appeared a part from the sign in the picture? Had it happened in another country would it have caused hilarity as well? Or is it something specific to wales? Royal wedding relevant? Was the hilarity caused mainly by the image? By the reference to someone famous? Is it a common street sign in Wales?

Earnest wrote:was it hilarious because of the scenario? what do you mean by 'scenario'? Was it placed in its original place? It was placed at the site intended for it With no modifications? Well, it was a new sign... explore though Was it at a crossroad? irrel In a street? yes Was there something near? yes A shop? yes An house? houses plural Was a picture of the sign taken? yes but mostly irrel (the photo served no purpose other than to spread hilarity on the internet) If so relevant what appeared a part from the sign in the picture? no Had it happened in another country would it have caused hilarity as well? there are a few other countries in which this could happen, in theory Or is it something specific to wales? It's definitely a Welsh thing! Royal wedding relevant? no Was the hilarity caused mainly by the image? the hilarity was caused by the sign itself... the internet photo later went viral By the reference to someone famous? No Is it a common street sign in Wales? Yesish - similar signs are common in Wales but...
explore

Good questions!

If this is the sign I'm thinking of, I somehow recall it being the subject of a previous LTPF puzzle.

I'm going to call this... Biograd pointed out in a PM that this puzzle appeared fairly recently on LTPF (but before I joined). Balin has also messaged me with the answer. Sorry!
So...

Welsh signs are in both languages; Welsh and English. Some people are bilingual, but some only speak English. So translations are checked by a designated language expert before the sign is made.

On this occasion, the translator was away when the request was sent, so her mailbox sent an automated reply: "I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated."
