[Admin] What is orange and sounds like a parrot?

Postby Admin » Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:09 pm

It has been reported that sales of carrots have increased sharply in the UK in the last two years. Why is that?

Is the report accurate? Are the carrots cooked? Juiced? Grated? Eaten by humans? Fed to animals? Used to make snowman noses? Used instead of something else? Discarded? Are any other veggies also experiencing a similar surge? Did carrots suffer from a stigma that has now been lifted? Relevant how they were cultivated? Where? Did a celebrity endorse carrots in some way? Did carrots become more glamorous? Did this happen after a specific event?

What is the measurement of sales, is it in terms of money or the amount of carrots? Is it relevant whether those carrots are produced domestically or imported? If latter, is exchange rate relevant? Did the sales drop more than 2 years ago? Did a similar change happen in Ireland? France? USA?

Was the relevant event a sporting event? A political event? An entertainment event? A weather event? A humanitarian effort sort of event? Is the event simply the act of misreporting the sales figures of carrots?

Was the misreporting accidental? Was it done by a particular relevant individual? By a relevant group? Company? A lobbyist organisation? Was it done for humourous effect? To boost sales of carrots? To boost sales of something other than carrots? To get people to do something? (Visit the doctor, optometrist, veterinarian more often?) Are rabbits involved? Is Bugs Bunny relevant to this? Are the carrots in question vegetables? Or is there another relevant definition of “carrot” at play?

Brexit relevant? Did the way sales of carrots were tracked changed? Are sales now being double-counted?

Have the creators of the report added the sales of something else to the carrot total? Their ever dependable partner the humble parsnip? Has the definition of what constitutes the UK changed with regard to these statistics?

Is there some ridiculous bureaucracy going on?

Is it relevant that the Welsh word for carrot is 'moron'? Did somebody observe the recent rise to prominence of morons in the world and extrapolate from that?

* * * SPOILER * * *

Well done Lemoncurry.

Are people cheating by weighing more expensive vegetables as carrots, in order to save money?
YES.

The Times recently reported that Britons appeared to have bought 800 million more carrots in 2017 than in 2013. However, carrots are the cheapest supermarket vegetable by weight so there are significant savings if you select them while weighing other produce. This is shoplifting through self-service tills. Shops that use self-service tills have double the average loss from shop-lifting.
