Man = HAM?
Is there a specific individual who is asking him this difficult question? A group of people? 'The public' in general? The media? Has the question already been asked of him? Or does he merely anticipate that the question will be asked?

Are any of the following involved - politics? show business? family? marriage? romance? friendship? his career? medical issues? the internet?

When he stayed in bed, was it known to the questioner(s) that he was in bed? Was he pretending to be ill? Was he hiding? Relevant where this bed was? Was it in his house? Someone else's house? A hospital? During this bedridden week, did someone take care of him? Relevant who cooked his meals? Does he do this himself?

Perhaps this man is a lateral puzzle host, and could not figure out how to answer a question someone posted? Heheh

Man = HAM? Yes
Is there a specific individual who is asking him this difficult question? Yes, one person A group of people? 'The public' in general? The media?
Has the question already been asked of him? Yes Or does he merely anticipate that the question will be asked? Thus, no

Are any of the following involved - politics? show business? family? marriage? romance? friendship? his career? medical issues? the internet? Family/marriage/romance

When he stayed in bed, was it known to the questioner(s) that he was in bed? Yes Was he pretending to be ill? No Was he hiding? No
Relevant where this bed was? Yes Was it in his house? Someone else's house? A hospital? This
During this bedridden week, did someone take care of him? Yes, see above Relevant who cooked his meals? Does he do this himself? No, see above

Perhaps this man is a lateral puzzle host, and could not figure out how to answer a question someone posted? Heheh As far as can be deduced, he is unrelated to this forum, except by being featured on it.

Is the questioner HAF? His wife? fiancée? romantic interest? Was her question to him about their relationship? Did she ask if he wanted to marry her? If he loved her? If he wanted children? If he regretted their relationship? Was the question difficult in the sense that he did not know the answer? Or difficult in the sense that the answer might not be pleasing to the questioner? Would you say the question is emotionally difficult (eg. what does my heart truly desire?) or practically difficult (eg. how can I solve this logistical problem?)

So this man (can we call him Shawn?) stays in hospital for a week, correct? Was he already in hospital when the question was asked? Does he have a medical condition? Is he injured? If you were to ask a doctor or nurse at the hospital, would they say that he had a reason to be staying there as a patient? Would they be right? If the question had not been asked of him, would he still be in the hospital at all? for a period shorter than a week? Does he deliberately injure himself in order to stay in hospital?

Does he eventually answer the question? Relevant? Does the questioner visit him while he is in hospital?

did he avoid answering a question that would be asked anyway, or did the questioners found that it was no longer necessary to ask the question somehow, through knowing that he's been bedridden for a week?

If the question had not been asked, would he have stayed in bed for a week? Shorter? Not at all? Did he need to stay in bed? Was he sick? Injured? Would his answer to this question greatly affect his future? Did he avoid answering the question? When he was asked the question, did he then hatch the plan to stay in bed for a week? Could he have gotten up earlier if he wanted to?

Is the questioner HAF? Yes His wife? This fiancée? romantic interest?
Was her question to him about their relationship? Indirectly
Did she ask if he wanted to marry her? If he loved her? If he wanted children? If he regretted their relationship? None of these
Was the question difficult in the sense that he did not know the answer? No Or difficult in the sense that the answer might not be pleasing to the questioner? Yes Would you say the question is emotionally difficult (eg. what does my heart truly desire?) or practically difficult (eg. how can I solve this logistical problem?) Closer to "emotional," but not quite like your example

So this man (can we call him Shawn?) Certainly stays in hospital for a week, correct? Yes Was he already in hospital when the question was asked? Depends on what you mean by "in hospital," but I'll say Yes Does he have a medical condition? Yes Is he injured? No If you were to ask a doctor or nurse at the hospital, would they say that he had a reason to be staying there as a patient? Yes Would they be right? Yes
If the question had not been asked of him, would he still be in the hospital at all? Yes, but... for a period shorter than a week? ...Yes Does he deliberately injure himself in order to stay in hospital? No

Does he eventually answer the question? Not verbally Relevant? Yes Does the questioner visit him while he is in hospital? Possibly

did he avoid answering a question that would be asked anyway, or did the questioners found that it was no longer necessary to ask the question somehow, through knowing that he's been bedridden for a week? The second one

If the question had not been asked, would he have stayed in bed for a week? Shorter? Not at all? A few hours, probably
Did he need to stay in bed? Yes Was he sick? He had a medical condition, Yes Injured? No
Would his answer to this question greatly affect his future? Yes Did he avoid answering the question? Verbally, yes When he was asked the question, did he then hatch the plan to stay in bed for a week? No Could he have gotten up earlier if he wanted to? No

Hmmm..... You said it depends on what you mean by "in [the] hospital." If it weren't for the question, would he still be a patient at the hospital? Or would he be there for some other reason? Did he work there? As a doctor? A nurse? A custodian? An orderly? A cook? Or would be visiting another patient? The wife perhaps? Or would he have been there for some nefarious reason, like to carry out an attack?

Did the question cause a medical issue? Make a medical issue worse? Did it make him faint? Fall into a coma?

Did the question cause a medical issue? Yes Make a medical issue worse? Yes Did it make him faint? Fall into a coma? It induced a heart attack

Do we need to find out what his medical condition was? You've got that - now all you need is the question

Is the man's age relevant? The wife's? Was a crime committed? By the man, his wife? Poisoning involved? Was the question concerning the wife, the husband, someone else? So, if the question had not been asked, the man would not have suffered a heart attack? Presumably it was the man who suffered the heart attack? Or the wife, or someone else? Was there some mistake or misunderstanding? Something deliberate?

Was it a question that could've resulted in a divorce? Did the question reveal that the wife knew something that he had tried to keep secret?

Sorry for popping up...the question have been asked and he had a heart attack because of the question right? Relevant the original cause of the recovery? To be sure...did the wife work in the hospital? (e.g. she was a doctor and needed to ask whether he has ever had an affair?...)

Was the question rhetorical? Annoying for him? Was it a yes-no question? Had the question been asked by someone else in presence of the wife, would he have had an heart attack as well? Had the question been asked by someone else in absence of the wife, would he have had an heart attack as well?
Was the question about his physical status? Did he live with her wife and see her regularly? Can we assume an happy couple? Crimes relevant? (e.g. the wife that poisoned him and rhetorically asked whether he liked the poisonous drink she gave him, but he was not able to reply because he was mute?)
Did they relevantly have son/daughters? Was the wife as concerned as him once he gave his "non verbal answer"?
Was it an innocuous question per se (e.g. she asked whether he remembered to close the gas before leaving, but he knew he did not implying that the dog was dead/ that the house would have soon exploded)?

****SPOILER****

The man was about to enter the hospital for a check-up when his phone rang. His wife answered, became angry, and asked why the woman on the phone was claiming to be his girlfriend. The man responded by having a heart attack, for which he was hospitalized for a week.

(The story as described in the original source - the link that's the word "SPOILER" - is more darkly humorous than my description. Also I flipped the wife and GF in the puzzle... whoops.)

The situations surrounding that one happen to be some of the more... "unfortunate" ones in that thread... sorry.

I've actually plucked a good number of puzzles from there - there's a lot of humorous stories, which IMO outnumber the disgusting and the sad. (Of course, lots are darkly humorous... which may be why I like them so much.)
