[Balin] Calories, or a slice

Postby Balin » Fri Nov 02, 2018 5:20 pm

Cole is a health-conscious person who rarely eats hamburgers. One day, he spots a sign for a restaurant advertising a deal on hamburgers: order one, get a second for two dollars cheaper. When he sees this, he breaks into a wide grin and becomes ecstatic. Why?

Does he plan on exploiting a loophole? Say, ordering one, getting a second for two dollars cheaper, getting a third for two dollars less than that, and so on until eventually they're paying him to buy hamburgers?

Does it need to be the exact same type of hamburger, or is a similar burger work?

Is Cole a marketer or something similar who has been contracted by the restaurant? Does he work for somebody whose product is used in the making of the burgers? Does he relevantly expect that the restaurant’s business will: improve? decrease? stay the same?

Does he want to buy food for a homeless person? For someone else, other than himself? Is he himself hungry? Once he sees this ad, does he enter the restaurant? If so, to eat?

Does it matter that Cole is health-conscious? Are the hamburgers really made with meat?

Is it relevant what other businesses are near the restaurant? Or f there are my houses nearby?

he breaks into a wide grin and becomes ecstatic.  = he befan to eat hamburgers every day? Sorry I did not understand the english...does it mean that he had a mental rule not to eat hamburgers and then began to break the rules once exploited the offer? Was it a fast food offer? Was him vegan or vegetarian? Had he got alergies? Religion relevant? Diets?
Did he work in a fast food? Did he began to eat hamburgers for their taste? Did he eat the hamburgers he bought?

Is it relevant the price of the hamburgers? If so, [list of numbers]? Is this offer limited by date, number or anything else? Are rivals relevant? Does he own the building or anything pertaining to the business, or its supply? Did he tell anyone about this? Did he know the proprietor or staff? Would this work with any other product? If so, food based or other? Are the number of calories relevant? A slice = a portion?

Did he see an advertisement? A billboard? A spot on tv? Relevant? Is his smile due to happiness? Was him happy for the offer been made? For the fact that he could exploit it? That someone else would have exploited it (e.g. he run an ice cream shop and knew that the higher the amount of people going to the fast food the higher the probability they would have bought an ice cream from him)? Had he eaten a lot of hamburgers would he have been happy (a part from the possibility of explouting possibly the offer)?

Did he see an advertisement? Depends on the type of ad, but see next A billboard? This would work, but I see it as he saw one of those signs with the replaceable letters out in front of the building A spot on tv? No Relevant? Yes, to an extent

Flyers or coupons relevant? Has he been annoyed by similar offers or junk mails? Does he expect he'll be able to get a deal too on something else? That his favourite restaurant close to this fast food joint will be less crowded due to this offer?

Wo...you are right...apart apart apart...uffff xD

So had other offers been made previously? Does the offer involve just hamburgers? Menus? Could he indirectly benefit from the offer? Could the offer damage someone? If a benefit is involved is it in monetary terms?
The possibility of eating hamburgers or buy them in the future exploiting the offer is not relevant? Are lictures/letters on the ad relevant? Like he could steal one or exploit one to his advantage? Are signs/simbols relevant? Arrows? (E.g. he run a small business (he sold sandwiches in a kiosk that was right under the billboard which has an arrow pointing toward the kiosk) if so were the arrows put to indicate where the fast food was? That the prices went down? Others?

Was him happy because somethibg would have not been annoying anymore? Sometging would have not bothered (is it right?) him anymore? Sunlight relevant? Had the offer not been present/ another offer from another seller but the billboard were, would the puzzle still work? Relevant were it (he saw the offer) happened? In a public place? ( airport, mall...?) In an open space? Mac Drive relevant?

time of day is relevant ---> night? Afternoon? Morning?
Is the open space near the fast food making the offer? On a street? In a park? Was him on a public mean of transport? Was the advertisement?

Yes, if I understand correctly --> what I meant is the following: is he more interested in the billboard than in the advertisement on it?

Was his happiness temporary? Did it last for all the time the offer was valid? For all the time the billboard was present?

WAG (I know it cannot be but I'll try) --> is it something like the advertisement was depicted on a bus, he was late and thought not to be on time to take it, but when he saw the advertisement (and hence the bus) he realized he could take it safely?

Is his happiness due to the billboard getting used (vs not used?)
Would he similarly become happy if the billboard's content got changed from a promotion of something else to promotion of burger?
Property of unused billboard relevant? e.g. it may be made out of metal and can reflect light to make it unbearably bright if you drive in that direction?
Does the burger promotion relevantly cover something? Relevantly attract the attention of some people?

Is what's OTRT: a property of unused billboard? the material it is made of? reflection of light? is Cole driving or walking in some particular direction where the billboard would annoy him if it weren't used for burger promotion? are lamps being shone on the board that lightens the road at night where no working street lamp exists?

Has Cole any relevant issues concerning his vision? Is he in a dangerous situation? Does seeing the light indicate that someone is around? That someone can help him with something? Provide him refuge?

Re: the previous yope to there being relevant houses/businesses around. Is it that there are relevantly no buildings around? Is he perhaps driving a barren stretch of highway and in desperate need of either sleep or a bathroom break?

Is what's OTRT: a property of unused billboard? Yope, see next the material it is made of? No reflection of light? Yope - the relevant property is that it is easily visible is Cole driving THIS, however, is very relevant or walking in some particular direction where the billboard would annoy him if it weren't used for burger promotion? No are lamps being shone on the board that lightens the road at night where no working street lamp exists? No, but not a bad idea

As I've said, it wasn't a billboard - the sign was right outside the restaurant. But Yes Did the sign say which exit or road led to the burger place? See previous allowing him to determine how to get back to where he came from? Yes

Is he driving from the airport? No Does the sign allow him to locate his hotel along his drive where there isn't much else that allows him to locate the hotel otherwise? Yope, but you are right in that he is returning to his hotel

So, he left from the hotel and was on his way somewhere else, right? But he got lost? And when he saw the sign, he knew how to get back to the hotel?

Had someone at the hotel given him directions to his destination? If so, was the burger place part of the directions?

Could he not get a GPS signal? Yes!

****SPOILER****

Cole was attending a wedding in a rural area away from his home state. He used his GPS to travel from the hotel to the wedding; on the way, he passed a restaurant with a noticeable advertisement out front. After the wedding, Cole tried to use his GPS to get back to the hotel, but couldn't get a signal, so he had to guess. Although he wasn't sure where he was going, he eventually spotted the same restaurant advertisement, suggesting that he was heading the right way (and would soon be in an area he could acquire a signal).

This is a true story that occurred to me, with a few changes for puzzling's sake: the sign was for a market, not a restaurant, and I do eat hamburgers. (Also, I did have a GPS unit as well, but the cord was frayed and it couldn't get power.)

Nicely done, and have a happy Thanksgiving.
