[Doriana] Stop me if you think you've heard this one before

Postby Doriana » Thu Nov 22, 2018 5:46 pm

A group of people (H/A/mixed) is in an elevator. One person makes a joke. Everyone laughs, except for one guy, who rolls his eyes. What's going on?

Was the guy victim of a joke? Offended by the joke? Rolls his eyes=he was disappointed? If so by the joke? Is the elevator broken? Is it moving? Relevant if up or down? Relevant how many people were in the elevator? More than 4?

Is the joke something involving smell?

Is the nature of the joke related to what's happening in the lift? Was it a the vein of 'I suppose you're all wondering why I've called you to this meeting?'

Is the location of the lift relevant? Is there a relevant relationship between the people in the lift? If so, are they co-workers? Family? Is there a relevant quality to Mr. Eyeroll? Is he physically normal?

Is Mr. Eyeroll privy to information the others don't know about?

Are any of the people in the lift dwarves with umbrellas?

Are sounds relevant? (E.g. sound of the elevator reaching a floor? A voice announcing the floor number? Something ringing?) Are they going to a specific floor of a building? To the roof? Ground floor? Relevant which floor (may I invoke the list)? Do floors have specific names? Did they all go to the same floor? Did someone else call the elevator while they were reaching the desired floor? If so did it happen just once? Is a pun involved? E.g. the Prof is called Florian...
Relevant the field of the Professor? Math? Science? Biology? History? English? Art? Religion? Others?

Relevant which building they were in? An hotel? Relevant where they were going to? To have breakfast? To a study room?

4th floor --> did they take the elevator there? Did they stop there for some reason? Pronunciation of "fourth floor" relevant? Is it relevant how fourth was written on the button of the elevator? 4^th? "Fourth"?

Did someone of asiatic origins pronunciate "l" instead of "r" so that "fourth" sounded like "fowl"? Something like "fowl flow"? Fourth as "fort"? "Fault"? Floor as "flour"?

Was the building located in a "native speaker" english population?

Spelling relevant? Grammatic? Orogin of words?

RECAP: A professor and some other people who are noishly co-workers are in an elevator, either at a hotel or in a university building. The professor relevantly researches American English dialects and pronunciation. The pronunciation of "fourth floor" is relevant and someone makes a joke about it. The professor rolls his eyes, while all others think it's funny.

That's an impressive list, but I'm afraid the exact dialect is irrel. So are all other details about the professors or his research.

The only thing that remains to be found out is why he rolled his eyes at the joke/remark.

RECAP (old recap with new info added in italics) : A professor and some other people who are noishly co-workers (some of them might be students, but not his students) are in an elevator, either at a hotel or in a university building. The professor relevantly researches American English dialects and pronunciation. The pronunciation of "fourth floor" is relevant and someone makes a lighthearted joke/remark about it. The professor rolls his eyes, while all others think it's funny. He understands the joke and is not offended by it.

Does he find the joke dumb? This might play a role, but it's not the main reason

So the pronunciation of "fourth floor" is relevant, but not *which* American accent it's pronounced in? Or is it pronounced in an American accent at all? Is the accent rhotic? Non-rhotic? Is the similarity between "floor" and "flaw" in some accents relevant?

Is "fourth floor" said in English, or in some other language (while said language is being spoken in an "American accent" perhaps? XD)

You're all dancing around a small yet important detail. No more details about the joke are relevant to the solution. We've established that the professor understands the joke and does not find it offensive, so what other reasons could he have to not find it funny? What reasons do *you* have for not finding a joke funny?

if I've heard it before so many times that it's just not funny anymore, I suppose... is that it?

if I've heard it before so many times that it's just not funny anymore, I suppose... is that it? YES! Another solve by my dear Kaylee

********SPOILER********

The professor is William Labov, one of the founders of modern sociolinguistics, who did research on variation in pronunciation in the 1960s. He (or more likely, his grad students) went to different department stores and asked people where to find a certain item, and the answer was always "fourth floor".

Decades later, someone finds themselves in an elevator with Labov at a conference. He turns to him and says, "So, you're getting off at the fourth floor, I guess?". Labov has heard variations of this joke countless times over the last 50 years, so while all other confernece attendees in the elevator crack up, he just shakes his head and rolls his eyes.
