Is the type of drink relevant? If so, tea? Coffee? Water? Soda? Something alcoholic?

Does he specify the size in his order? If so, is this misinterpreted? Is he ordering in his native tongue?

Is his order correctly understood? Is the cafe able to fulfill his order? Is his being presented with a beverage a direct response to his placing an order for one?

Is Christmas relevant?

Is he in Starbucks? Or another place that likes to use weird or Italian words to represent drink size for no good reason?
Is the drink foamy? Is ice involved? Did he pay for what he intend to order or did he pay for the smaller beverage? Did they run out of the drink? Out of larger cups?

Relevant how much smaller it is? Is it the next size down? Is it smaller in order to punish him? Reward him? Is it intentionally made smaller? Is it made smaller? Or does it become smaller afterwards? Is it hot? Carbonated? Evaporation relevant?

Is he Italian? Wanted to order the "large" one by saying "grande" but got the Starbucks "grande" instead of the large "venti" which is what he truly had in mine?

Is he Italian? Spanish but you have the right idea Wanted to order the "large" one by saying "grande" but got the Starbucks "grande" instead of the large "venti" which is what he truly had in mine? Yes, and as expected, this was a quick

****SPOILER****

The man is Spanish. He wanted to order a large drink from Starbucks and asked for a "grande" size, but "grande" is Starbucks' medium size.

Nice rapid solve, and thanks to my Spanish-speaking coworker who inspired this puzzle.
