Postby Doriana » Thu Dec 13, 2018 1:14 pm

Does Paula know Jenny well? Are they family members (parent/child)? Friends? Teacher & student? Researcher & subject (yes, I spotted the ROIMBT tag)?
Is it relevant exactly what Jenny watches all day? Does she watch one show? Multiple shows? Something that is not a show? Infomercials?
Is Jenny actually all that studious?

Is it an educational channel? Relevant what times constitute "all day"? Is it a channel that was devoted to science but has devolved into nonsense, like The Learning Channel?

Does it seem that Jenny is taking notes? Does Jenny repeat the words she sees? Does Paula know she is a child? Does Jenny speak well her own language?

Does Jenny watch programs in a made up language? Programs with no language? Sign language? Subtitles relevant? No to all, getting OTWT - but I might have misled you with my earlier "yope" Does Paula see the screen? Irrel - it's only relevant that she can hear the TV See Jenny? Yes

Is Paula taking care of Jenny? Is Paula a neighboor seeing Jenny watching TV from a distance? Could Paula hear what said on Jenny's TV? Did Paula know Jenny speaks a different language than her? Is the language totally different? Is it a dialect (so that Paula and Jenny had interactions in the ordinary language but Jenny watched a local TV in her dialect which differs a lot from the original language") Is Jenny living in a place where multiple languages are spoken (e.g. sud Tirol, Switzerland...)?

Is Paula taking care of Jenny? yes Is Paula a neighboor seeing Jenny watching TV from a distance? no Could Paula hear what said on Jenny's TV? yes Did Paula know Jenny speaks a different language than her? NO! Good question! Is the language totally different? Yes Is it a dialect (so that Paula and Jenny had interactions in the ordinary language but Jenny watched a local TV in her dialect which differs a lot from the original language") No Is Jenny living in a place where multiple languages are spoken (e.g. sud Tirol, Switzerland...)? Is Jenny blind? No So she can hear the TV but not see it? No, she can hear and see the TV. For the solution, it's only relevant that Paula can hear the TV (i.e. the language spoken on TV).

I think we have all the elements for the $poiler. Anyone wanna put the pieces together?

Attempt at recat/piecing together:
Jenny is a child being watched over by Paula, who isn't a neighbour, relative or friend and doesn't know her well - a babysitter, au pair or nanny recently acquired, perhaps?

Jenny is sitting quietly watching TV in a language Paula isn't familiar with. She didn't know Jenny spoke a different language than her (I suppose Jenny must be bilingual, at least, if not a total polyglot? Do each of her parents speak a different language?) So I assume Jenny has had interactions with her in the language they both speak, but Jenny's primary language is the one Paula doesn't speak?

Does Paula think Jenny is learning the other language, and watching TV for educational purposes? While in fact it's Jenny's first language and she's watching TV for fun? Is the TV show something Paula would disapprove of if she understood the language?

Attempt at recat/piecing together:
Jenny is a child being watched over by Paula yesish, who isn't a neighbour, relative or friend and doesn't know her well - a babysitter, au pair or nanny recently acquired, perhaps? None of these

Jenny is sitting quietly watching TV in a language Paula isn't familiar with. She didn't know Jenny spoke a different language than her (I suppose Jenny must be bilingual, at least, if not a total polyglot? Do each of her parents speak a different language? Her parents speak two languages, but she's only fluent in one) So I assume Jenny has had interactions with her in the language they both speak, but Jenny's primary language is the one Paula doesn't speak? Yes

Does Paula think Jenny is learning the other language, and watching TV for educational purposes? YES While in fact it's Jenny's first language and she's watching TV for fun? Yes Is the TV show something Paula would disapprove of if she understood the language? Irrel

Well done, Kaylee!

Time for the

********SPOILER********

Jenny is a Chinese-American girl who grew up in America and speaks very little Chinese. Her family goes to China where she has to be hospitalized for a week. Jenny doesn't know enough Chinese to understand Chinese TV, so she watches the only English language channel all day. Her nurse Paula does not know that English is her first language, so she thinks Jenny is so studious that she watches TV for educational purposes even though she's in hospital

(Taken from one of the Not Always Right sites, but I don't remember which one and I'm too lazy to search for it :D )
