[Hobbsicle] Frozen Assets

Postby Hobbsicle » Wed Feb 20, 2019 3:59 am

A man walks into a place of business. The woman behind the counter gives him a single ice cube, and the man gives her something worth a few hundred dollars. He leaves, satisfied. Explain.

OAATP puzzle (One question at a time, but you are allowed to suggest multiple variables for the same question [e.g. Is she the man's mother? Aunt? Sister? Real estate agent?] And PM for early spoilers.)

Does he get anything besides an ice cube? Does the ice cube contain anything besides everyday water? will the man get the item back? Does the man own the item before giving it away? Relevant what he will do with the ice cube? Will he use it to cool something or someone? Melt it? Throw it away? Crush it? Throw it at something or someone? Use it as a time delay device? Such as for propping something open for a limited amount of time?

Is it a normal ice cube in every regard? Is the ice cube more valuable than a normal ice cube for some reason? Is it one of the exotic forms of ice that only exist at extreme temperatures and/or pressures? (Wikipedia it) Is it made of heavy water? Is it the rapper Ice Cube?

Did she give him a specific amount/measure of the ice cubed? I mean of a certain specific weight/height/dimension so that he could achieve his aim...

If WAGs are counted as questions, please feel free to skip it.

WAG --> is it a "sculpture" competition on ice cubes and the man gave the woman the model of what he wanted to reproduce?

Is the ice cube to cool something? Someone? A liquid? A drink? To swallow? Would he have any more use for 2 ice cubes? A sheet of ice? A glass of ice cold water? Does this happen in mordern times? Relevant how the ice cube was made? Does the place of business have lot of ice cubes? Is ice their primary business? Do they sell drinks? Food? Relevant?

Hey GalFisk, you may have missed from the description that I had set this as a One At A Time puzzle. I've let it slide so far, but since others are sticking to it, I'll start enforcing it from here on for now. If this ends up being a bit trickier than I thought, I'll relax those standards later.

Did he use the cube to reduce the temperature of someone (e.g. he put it on the forehead)? To cool someone's skin? To cool his own skin? To cool his own skin before touching someone? To cool someone together with other ice cubes put by other people?

Earnest

Did he use the cube to reduce the temperature of someone (e.g. he put it on the forehead)? To cool someone's skin? To cool his own skin? He uses it on his own skin, see below To cool his own skin before touching someone? To cool someone together with other ice cubes put by other people?

LemonCurry

Does he use the ice to get a ring off his finger? Got it!

***********SPOILER***********

The man visits a jeweler, because his wedding ring is stuck on his finger. The jeweler gives him an ice cube and instructs him to hold it in his elevated hand for five minutes. This reduces the swelling and constricts the finger enough that he is able to work it off. He gives it to the jeweler to be resized and leaves, satisfied that he didn’t have to get the ring cut off his finger.

Good job to LemonCurry for making the lateral leap, and thanks to all who participated.
