[CoffeeBean] At The Misfortune Of Others, No. 1

Postby CoffeeBean » Tue May 28, 2019 7:22 pm

When I was 16 years old, I went somewhere with a friend of mine. While we were there, we discovered that under certain conditions a person in that place could experience a most unfortunate situation. When we saw someone experience this, we found it quite funny, partly because a degree of bravery was required for the person to be in the position to experience the unfortunate situation. When I returned to that place a few years later, I noticed that something had been changed so that what once was a very unfortunate situation would now be, at most, a minor annoyance. And it wouldn't be nearly as funny. Can you guess what it is?

Would the new situation still require the same amount of bravery to get into? Are heights involved? Tight places? Darkness? Electricity? Was the unfortunate situation dangerous? Embarrassing? Did it require outside help to resolve? Were the conditions that could cause it out of the control of the victim? Were the conditions related to weather? If so: ice? Snow? Rain? Wind? Cold? Heat? Mud? Fog? Sleet? Lightning?

Would the new situation still require the same amount of bravery to get into? Yes, pretty much
Are heights involved? Yes Tight places? Yes-ish but a certain kind of them Darkness? Electricity? Not these
Was the unfortunate situation dangerous? To some degree Embarrassing? Very! Did it require outside help to resolve? Yes, almost always
Were the conditions that could cause it out of the control of the victim? No, certainly not (but you may want to explore this idea)
Were the conditions related to weather? No
If so: ice? Snow? Rain? Wind? Cold? Heat? Mud? Fog? Sleet? Lightning? Rain and wind could be potentially related

Climbing relevant? Trees? Rocks? Mountains? Buildings? Structures? Narrow ledges? Vehicles? Flooding? Toilets?
Did the change mean that a person could now get themselves out of the situation?
Could a child get into this situation? A teen? Adult? Old person? Could the victim cause the situation by: showing off? Being clumsy? Wearing the wrong thing? Being drunk?

Climbing relevant? Trees? Rocks? Mountains? Buildings? Structures? Narrow ledges? Vehicles? Flooding? Toilets? Structures and vehicles, but with a variation...
Did the change mean that a person could now get themselves out of the situation? Not always, but it did likely prevent something from happening
Could a child get into this situation? A teen? These more likely, but... Adult? ...it was an adult that we witnessed get into this situation.
Old person? Sure Could the victim cause the situation by: showing off? This doesn't really cause it, but it does make it funny Being clumsy? In a way, yes, but another term fits better Wearing the wrong thing? Definitely this Being drunk? Probably, but I don't think a drunk person would be in the place where this happened

Better answer...
showing off? At certain times this could surely lead to the situation before the change was made

Is it supposed to stall at this point? Is someone not properly using the restraints then dropped on their head? Otherwise incapacitated?

Is the predicament caused by being upside down? By not following instructions? Restraints relevant? Things falling? Losing stuff from pockets?

Does the stuff lost end up in an inaccessible place? Was the issue fixed with a stuff catcher? New restraint that covered up one's pockets?

Does the stuff lost end up in an inaccessible place? Sometimes
Was the issue fixed with a stuff catcher? YES New restraint that covered up one's pockets? No

** SPOILER **

An amusement park near our town used to have a ride called the "Looping Starship", and it resembled NASA's space shuttle. The ride held approx. 60 people at a time, and it worked by swinging the ship back and forth, at one point holding it completely upside down before looping it a few times. When I rode it with my friend, we got a big laugh when the ship stopped at the upside down point and we saw someone's wallet fall through the air and money and other things it in scattered. Not funny to the person who lost it, I'm sure. When I went back to the park a few years later, there were warning signs about securing personal belongings, and a "stuff catcher" net had been added just above the seating area to catch any objects that might fall from pockets when the ride paused upside down.

Nice work by Galfisk to solve quickly
