[Hobbsicle] Slots

Postby Hobbsicle » Wed Jun 05, 2019 1:36 am

A woman drops a couple of dollars worth of coins and thus becomes one of the most famous figures in history. Who is she?

A different sort of puzzle than I might usually do, but thought it interesting. PM if you know it within the first post or two, but it will go fast regardless, I think, though it depends on your prior familiarity. I would also request we don't narrow it down through LTPF lists of years, countries, or similar brute force means.

Relevant how many coins there are? Does she drop them in a jar? Well? Fountain? Register? On the ground? By accident? On purpose? Does she pick them up again? Does someone else? Is she rich at the time? Poor? Neither? Does she become famous because of dropping the coins? Because something that happened before she did it? During? After? Is she photographed around this time? Does photography exist yet? Does the fame include political power? Religious power? Economical power? Leadership? Rule? Infamy? War? Beauty? Celebrity status? Are the coins of US origin? Are they worth a couple of 2019 USD?

Relevant how many coins there are? Not entirely, but it could help. Two. Does she drop them in a jar? Well? Fountain? Register? On the ground? Not exactly any of these, but jar might be closest By accident? On purpose? This Does she pick them up again? No Does someone else? At some point Is she rich at the time? Poor? This Neither? Does she become famous because of dropping the coins? Partly this... Because something that happened before she did it? During? ...and partly this After? I suppose you could argue this as well Is she photographed around this time? No Does photography exist yet? No Does the fame include political power? Religious power? Economical power? Leadership? Rule? Infamy? War? Beauty? Celebrity status? None of these Are the coins of US origin? No Are they worth a couple of 2019 USD? At the time, they would have been about the equivalent of this, yes, give or take.

Could the same amount in cash have made the same effect (she becoming a prominent figure in history)? If not, because: cash were a symbol of something?, because she did not have cash? Because coins were dropped in a fountain? (E.g. in Italy it happens a lot)

Has she been photographed while doing this? Is she donating to emarginated people? To people considered to be ill? Is Mother Theresa relevant? Did she win a Nobel Prize? (Or maybe it was too early for a nobel?)
Was there someone physically asking for money? A poor person?

Did someone else put previously money where she dropped the coins? If so, coins? Of the same currency? Dollars? The same amount? A fixed amount? Was a couple of dollars a huge amount for the time? All she had? Did she donate the money instead of doing something else with them? Buy food? Buy something? Paying a tax/soldiers...? Did she become a symbol of freedom? Of positive values? Charity? Piety? Rebellion?

Did she drop the money as she was normally walking on a street? E.g. she was walking, she stopped, she drop the coins and then carried on her walk (assuming she dropped money from her hand right? Voluntarily? From a certain height corresponding to the height from her hand to the floor? She drop them on a box on the floor?)? Was this "normal" for the time? Are war zones relevant? Slums?

Did she drop money in a box? If so was the box used by someone (e.g. homeless) to ask for money? Was the box where she dropped coins used to gather money?

Is she actually now famous? Does she become a famous figure in a more metaphorical way, as in someone saying to her, "Thank you, you're a saint!" or something like that? Does her fame come within days? Weeks? Months? Years? Does she drop the coins into a machine? Bucket? Salvation Army relevant? Is there a relevant reason why she doesn't hand her donation to someone for collection? Is her name now synonymous with generosity? Is her image famous? Is she the logo/mascot for an organization?

Is she donating to a person? An organization? This A charity? Does she intend to become a symbol? No Is she ok with it? I don't think she knew... Relevant? Is she a symbol of generosity? Benevolence? Giving? Charity? Sharing? Perhaps all the previous to some degree, giving is most relevant Of a class of people? Of a group? Of a charity? A religion? Is she sainted? Something similar? Christianity is relevant, not a saint, though

Earnest

Could the same amount in cash have made the same effect (she becoming a prominent figure in history)? Don't quite understand the question, you mean paper bills? Irrel If not, because: cash were a symbol of something?, because she did not have cash? Because coins were dropped in a fountain? (E.g. in Italy it happens a lot) She only had coins. If it were a different form of money of a similar amount, it would have been the same effect

Has she been photographed while doing this? No, although in a more metaphorical sense... Is she donating to emarginated people? No To people considered to be ill? No Is Mother Theresa relevant? No Did she win a Nobel Prize? No (Or maybe it was too early for a nobel? It would have been, yes)
Was there someone physically asking for money? Yope A poor person? No

Did someone else put previously money where she dropped the coins? Yes If so, coins? Maybe some Of the same currency? Dollars? There weren't dollars at the time, but likely a different denomination or something The same amount? NO A fixed amount? No Was a couple of dollars a huge amount for the time? No, but... All she had? YES Did she donate the money instead of doing something else with them? That would be implied, but the specifics of that are irrelevant Buy food? Buy something? Paying a tax/soldiers...? Did she become a symbol of freedom? Of positive values? Charity? Piety? Something like this, I think Rebellion?

Did she drop the money as she was normally walking on a street? I'm not sure the exact setup, but essentially, yes, there were no relevant actions on her part before and after E.g. she was walking, she stopped, she drop the coins and then carried on her walk (assuming she dropped money from her hand right? Yes Voluntarily? Yes From a certain height corresponding to the height from her hand to the floor? She drop them on a box on the floor?)? Was this "normal" for the time? Yes Are war zones relevant? Slums? No to both

Did she drop money in a box? Or something similar If so was the box used by someone (e.g. homeless Not this, but...) to ask for money? Yes Was the box where she dropped coins used to gather money? Yes

trebor

Is she actually now famous? I would say so, yes, though perhaps DOYD Does she become a famous figure in a more metaphorical way, as in someone saying to her, "Thank you, you're a saint!" or something like that? No Does her fame come within days? Weeks? Months? Years? This Does she drop the coins into a machine? Bucket? I don't know off hand the exact means, but just some kind of collection box Salvation Army relevant? Is there a relevant reason why she doesn't hand her donation to someone for collection? Yes and no, just not how it was done, I believe Is her name now synonymous with generosity? Hmmm...yope Is her image famous? No Is she the logo/mascot for an organization? No, or not that I'm aware of

Was it evident that the amount constituted all that she had? All her savings?
Was she meant to be beneficiary of the association? Relevant where she got the money? Were her money been given by someone? Charity association? Is she donating to a charity association which helped people as her? Is the pope relevant? Has a picture been taken?

Earnest

Was it evident that the amount constituted all that she had? Maybe not evident to all, but it was known by at least one All her savings? I suppose so, yes
Was she meant to be beneficiary of the association? It was intentional, if that's what you mean Relevant where she got the money? No Were her money been given by someone? Not sure what you mean Charity association? Is she donating to a charity association which helped people as her? Hmm...maybe theoretically, but in this case, I doubt it Is the pope relevant? No Has a picture been taken? No

by at least one --> the receivers? Is a music/play/story/movie been made about her?

Did she meant to be noticed? Did she want to make a point? Did the receivers refuse her donation? Behave correctly? Did the receiver r

Relevant the reason she donated all her savings? If so relevant why she donated to that specific association? Would it have been the same had she donated to an homeless? Was the association meant to redistribute monwy to poor people/build up hospitals/facilities? Be ebenficial to poor people in general? Did the members of the association know that she was donating all that she had? Had someone else in her same conditions donate all his/her savings before? Is something criminal going on (if so on the associations' side)?

Was the someone who told about her famous/influencial? Did he tell about her to someone famous/influencial? Mass media?

Did it happen in a poor country? Relevant? Were thousands/millions of people in her same position financially? Relevant why she was poor? I mean...she was born poor/ her family was poor? Or maybe she became poor? By choice?

Did she become historically famous in one of the following ways: she was called by a king/queen? She was made rich again? She was depicted somewhere? She won a prize? She became protagonist of a movie?
Relevant which of the following made her famous in a first instance: her figure? Her gesture? Her name? Her symbol (did she became symbol of people victims of injustices/poor people/minorities)? A drawing of her?

by at least one --> the receivers? No Is a music/play/story This is closest /movie been made about her?

Did she meant to be noticed? NO Did she want to make a point? No Did the receivers refuse her donation? No Behave correctly? Not sure, no relevant behavior on their part

Relevant the reason she donated all her savings? Yope If so relevant why she donated to that specific association? Again, yope Would it have been the same had she donated to an homeless? Perhaps, yes Was the association meant to redistribute monwy to poor people/build up hospitals/facilities? Be ebenficial to poor people in general? Perhaps, I'm honestly not sure all of their official functions, somewhat irrel Did the members of the association know that she was donating all that she had? No, small ish Had someone else in her same conditions donate all his/her savings before? Not recently, anyway Is something criminal going on (if so on the associations' side)? Not relevantly

Was the someone who told about her famous/influencial? YES Did he tell about her to someone famous/influencial? You could argue that, yes Mass media? That probably wouldn't be the right term, but not far off, technically

Did it happen in a poor country? Relevant? Not really, there were poor and rich Were thousands/millions of people in her same position financially? Probably Relevant why she was poor? Not really I mean...she was born poor/ her family was poor? Or maybe she became poor? It was at least in part this By choice? No

Did she become historically famous in one of the following ways: she was called by a king/queen? Hmm...DOYD, mostly no, in the way that you likely mean it She was made rich again? No She was depicted somewhere? YES She won a prize? No She became protagonist of a movie? Doubtfullly. That at least wouldn't be the cause of her fame.
Relevant which of the following made her famous in a first instance: her figure? Her gesture? This Her name? Her symbol (did she became symbol of people victims of injustices/poor people/minorities)? It could be argued this to some degree, but nothing official A drawing of her? No to rest

******************SPOILER********************

She is the subject of a passage in the Bible (two, really; one in The Gospel of Mark and one in The Gospel of Luke). In the story, a widow drops two coins (worth the equivalent of a couple of dollars in today's time, give or take) into the temple treasury. Jesus is there observing, and notes to his disciples that she has given more than all of the rich men who had made a show of pouring in large amounts of money, because she gave all she had. So, in her act, she was recorded in the Bible, which is the most widely read book of all time.

I'm reminded of another similar Bible story where the woman pours expensive perfume onto Jesus' feet. He then says, "Wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."

Thanks for playing!
